Zen Yai Kow Pad Ka Pow. $10 lunch review

kow pad ka pow

Zen Yai’s been a bit of an institution on London Circuit for some time now with its flambouyant Thai fitout.

They also have a poster board cunningly advertising lunches “from $9”.

If one enquires at the counter the special takeaway lunch menu is produced and it has a handful of $9 dishes and a lot more for around $13.

How could I go past something called “Kow Pad Ka Pow”?

It took around 10 minutes to prepare, which they warned me of so I went for a little walk.

When I got it back to the office the first thing that struck on opening it was the delicious smell of BBQ Pork. The meat in this has been grilled before being fried in with the rice.

There were a smattering of beans in there as well as the inevitable slices of onion.

But the most overwhelming thing was the taste of black pepper.

I mean if you don’t really like the taste of black pepper this is not the dish for you.

But it’s certainly got some “Ka Pow”.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

I thought that was you I saw at lunch today. I had the $9 Pad Xe Uw, that was pretty good.

Word to those planning to eat in at lunchtime – the $9 lunch specials apply to eating in as well, but you have to ask for the menu (which I only discovered today thanks to my friend). That said, if you do order off their normal menu the servings are a little bigger. Either way, it’s tasty stuff.

I really like this place – never had the cheap lunchtime takeaway options but I can strongly recommend the standard menu.

Love Zen Yai! Great Thai food. I’ve never had a bad meal there. I didn’t realise they had a lunch takeaway menu … I need to look a bit harder next time I’m in Civic at lunch time (which is not very often unfortunately).
