The Canberra Times has the story of one Pamela Susan Close, a 20 year employee of ACTTAB who has had her house and car frozen by the Supreme Court under the Confiscation of Criminal Assets Act.

The affidavit reveals a loophole through which it will be alleged Ms Close managed to place trifecta bets on races after they finished.

It says ACTTAB’s betting system allowed an authorised person to reopen race betting after a false start, so customers could place bets as the race was reorganised.

but even more stunnned that they have the power to freeze houses and cars. Maybe they should go into the ice supply business?

Umm, the Supreme Court froze the assets….as in, you can’t sell them and piss off with the money because you probably paid for them with the proceeds of your (alleged) crime.

If they do the investigation and discover somehow that it wasn’t her then they will be dutifully un-frozen.

As for how she was able to do it, well the mechanism to re-open betting was in place for a justifiable reason. Obviously those that designed the system didn’t forsee its abuse and didn’t place sufficient controls on the circumstances under which it could be done.

I suspect that it was uncovered when a person taking the bet over the phone noticed that the race had already been run, if thats the case I hope they got a big hearty thankyou from ACTTAB who have some investigating to do into why no-one else noticed until now.

Yes, I was impressed too. Stunned that an agency like ACTTAB makes it possible to enter bets after the race has been run, but even more stunnned that they have the power to freeze houses and cars. Maybe they should go into the ice supply business?

Do not be ridiculous,This is all “AL EDGED” A 20yo could have worked for years and got the house and car thru her savings and super…Then again…20yo ??

20 year employee of ACTTAB, not a 20 year old.

The problem with scams like that is usually not getting the money, but not having anyone ever notice. She clearly failed at that.

In a previous life working on a financial database, we used to spend ages working out how to defraud our employer or the major banks. There were many ways to get the money into your account, but it would always be noticed sooner or later. So unless you wanted to move to a non extradition country….

Reading comprehension fail… 20 year employee does not equal 20 years old.

“Do not be ridiculous,This is all “AL EDGED” A 20yo could have worked for years and got the house and car thru her savings and super…Then again…20yo ??”

If you had taken the extra 10 seconds to read the link to the posting you would have seen that she is 56 years old, and I suspect an employee of 20 years at ACTTAB. Then again what would the forums be if people actually became informed prior to typing.

Only an agency as prehistoric and backwards as ACTTAB could go that long without noticing a scam such as this.
