Wedding Photographers?

Hi – Getting married (obviously), early next year and wondering if the collective RiotACT Hive Mind had any ideas about good photographers in Canberra? The array of possibilities on Google is exhaustive and very complicated as are the prices and one doesn’t want to shell out that amount of money without being sure of the service!

Ideally we’re looking for someone to stay with us through the day, but we don’t want extras (albums etc), just digital copies of all the photos so we can print at our leisure.

Any experiences good or bad as well as pricing would be really appreciated!

I’m going to recommend van dang… This guy was so great for our wedding. The whole day it was raining but be managed to work around it and get some stunning shots. The guy loves what he does and goes to extreme lengths to get the perfect shot. He actually laid down on the wet ground as he wanted to get the perfect shot. From the day we met him he was so lovely and just made you feel comfortable. If you aren’t comfortable with your photographer then your day will be horrible. This guy is the best and I hope someone goes by this forum and has a look 🙂 vandang.com.au

Hi,

As a photographer in Canberra I can suggest that you chose an Australian Institute of Professional Photography member and that whomever you use has a contract and are insured, have back-up cameras if one fails, that they always archive all your images just in case, knows Canberra, and is experienced so to anticipate any circumstance on the day. Cheapest isnt always best and I ceratinly feel that you must have a great rapport with whomever your chose because apart from each other they will most likely be the one person you spend most time with on the day. Congratulations and best of luck!

i was going to recommend hilary! and anyway suggest that in any event you get in touch with the aipp, for all the reasons hilary suggests. good luck, and remember, you get what you pay for – what are memories worth?

Amanda Thorson is also good. We were really happy with our photos from her.

Thanks guys, this has all been really helpful!

in my opinion, kelly tunney is the best in canberra. 2011 ACT AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) Photographer of the year.

she’s recently been required to travel overseas, such is her demand. absolutely breathtaking shots too, check her out at http://www.kellytunney.com.au

bit pricey but given that she straight up provides digital negatives and is easily one of the nicest people I’ve met in a long long time.

I’ll second that one. (From observation, not participation!)

Tate from T8 did ours when he first started T8 a while back. Did a great job and we’ve been back to get further pics since.

Ben @ http://www.benthomasphotos.com/weddings/ takes amazing shots, and has photographed a number of our friends weddings!

I was married in March at Lake Crackenback. We used Candice Ottoway from OPhotography http://www.ophotography.com.au. She is pricey, but I have found you get what you pay for with photography. I wanted more candid/artsy style photos (less of the ‘just stand here and smile’) she was amazing, I hate photos being taken of me but her and her college where so much fun and made me really comfortable. And from memory she has a package where she just takes the photos for you. 🙂

We were happy with the work of Art Atelier http://www.art-atelier.com.au/

He is a nice guy and also seems pretty good value compared to a number of other photographers we found online. Your money gets you the day’s photography, the post-processing and images delivered digitally. All the other stuff – IE photo albums, big prints, etc – are entirely optional.

Google around, take a look at their websites and make yourself a shortlist. Give them a call, maybe arrange to meet the most promising ones for a quick chat and a flip through their example albums..

One of the God-botherers I have on my Facey friends list recently started a wedding photography business. He’s young, and yet to really establish himself, but his photos seem pretty good, and he’s a polite young man.

That’s his website, if you’re at all interested.

In November we are using Daniel from Keepsake Photography for our wedding. He is a great guy, very reasonable rates and he has a real passion for great photos.

Jamie Carl is a great local option: http://www.jamiecarl.com.au/

This guy is the best, hands down…

You can go fishing for photographers on Canberra’s own The Photographers’s Den facebook page:

Definitely T8. Tate & Sam did ours, brilliant.

went to a wedding earlier in the year that was shot by Doug Hall from T8 photography and the shots that came back were great, Doug had a good grip on the vibe/atmosphere (relaxed and a bit irreverent) of the wedding and matched his attitude and style to that rather than trying for force particular shots
