A Canberran has died interstate after being hit by an object that reportedly fell off a caravan.
A NSW Police spokesperson said that just before 6:30 pm on Sunday (8 December), emergency services were called to Burley Griffin Way, Galong (about 50 km west of Yass), following reports a motorist had been hit by something.
Officers from the Hume Police District were told that the driver – a 49-year-old man from Canberra – had been travelling eastbound when an item dislodged from a caravan, which was being towed westbound.
This penetrated the windscreen and struck the man in the head.
The man died before emergency services arrived.
Three females travelling in the car with him – aged 48, 16 and 13 – were uninjured but were taken to Canberra Hospital to be treated for shock.
The 32-year-old male driver of the vehicle towing the caravan was not injured. He was taken to Harden Hospital for mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established and examined by officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.
As their investigations continue, police are asking anyone with information about the incident or who is in possession of any available dashcam or mobile phone footage to contact Yass Police Station on 6226 9399.
Alternatively, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
