50 Marcus Clarke

Following on from the Zumba Quake at DEEWR’s 50 Marcus Clarke St battlestar we’ve had word from our sources.

Apparently while all concerned are satisfied, nay convinced, there are no structural issues with the building Zumba classes have been exiled to other addresses.

I used to rent an apartment 15 floors up and during storms the water in the loos used to sway around quite distinctly. A tad disconcerting when one was using it…)

But there’s a big difference from the force of nature and a zumba class. I’m with Cletus3.

If use of the gym room for – you know – gym classes was likely to be a problem then it should have been put on L1.

Who knows what would happen if someone dared to run a Body Attack or Step class!

The building has a massive room set aside for a gym, but with no equipment due to stupid lawyer fears, and now no open floor fitness classes due to building design?

So what is it good for? Nothing beyond Tai Chi and Yoga?

IMHO.

I wouldn’t trust anything the engineers “have to say” after blaming previous ground movements on Zumba.

Reading some comments from the previous thread, it seems some people were in disbelief that a Zumba class with a few people could cause the vibration. Building wide Oscillations may be felt due to the Zumba dancers simulataneous steps causing vibrations that were at the buildings resonance frequency. Aparently some famous bridges have collapsed due to many people marching in step on them (when the combined load of the marching soldiers were easily within the bridges max load so it shouldn’t have collapsed etc).

The disbelief is not that resonance from a few people moving could cause a flimsy building to sway around, it is that the engineers had not damped frequencies that people are capable of exerting with force on the building.

from JB’s OP “Zumba Quake” needs to be added to urbandictioanary.com IMHO… obviously it is ‘normal’ for buildings to move in such a manner, so it won’t be an isolated incident.

Could the resonant vibration of a Zumba Class on Level 12 be transferred into the rooftop water tanks one floor up, causing the water to become unsettled and move around, thus shaking the building?

***** NEWS FLASH *****

It must haven fallen down. It’s not on google maps or on street view……

From the Zumba Website

“The Zumba® program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away.”

They didn’t mention blowing away buildings.
