16,000 Murray Cod into Lake Ginninderra

By johnboy 20 January 2009 19

Our Chiefly Leader has announced the stocking of an 16,000 baby Murray Cod into Lake Ginninderra (Canberra’s prettiest lake).

Apparently they’ll be good to go in four years time.

Of more importance is the corresponding launch of the Draft Fish Stocking Plan for the ACT 2009-2014.

If you are a keen angler you’ll be wanting to have a read of it and get your comments in by 2 March.

You can do that by either:

    Email:
    communityengagement@act.gov.au
Please ensure that you have entered ‘Fish Stocking Officer’ in the subject field.

    Post:
    Fish Stocking Officer
    Research and Planning
    Parks, Conservation and Lands
    Territory and Municipal Services
    PO Box 158
    Canberra ACT 2601

(And spare a thought for the poor fish stocking officer who apparently doesn’t warrant their own email alias)

What’s Your opinion?

I understand the purpose of stocking the lakes is to protect the wild bred natives in their natural habitates by enticing fisherpersons to just fish the lakes. So Fisho, it seems you agree with major facets if Government policy on this issue.

Gives the yokels something to catch besides carp, even if only occasionally.

Kudos!

What an absolute waste of codlings.
Lake Gininderra is foul. It will make a dog sick from swimming in it. Anyone eating anything out of it will not remain in the gene pool for any length of time.

Still, those fingerlings will provide a good feed for the cormorants and redfin for a couple of days.

It would be far better if we had some fisheries enforcement, a no-take policy on wild bred natives (genetically worthless stocked clones are only good as put and take, so who cares) and something to reduce the silt, deepen ALL the lakes to stop them being carp specific breeding zones (Jerra wetlands, Upper Stranger pond, Gordon pond – anything southside really) and heavily snagged it to create native habitat.

Pity they didn’t stock them somewhere which has relatively decent water quality by ACT standards, such as Googong. Token gestures should be taken for what they are.

Canberra urban lakes are primarily there as pollution control mechanisms, secondly as a prettification exercise to please the lycra clad power sweaters, fish species sadly don’t rate at all in the Govt’s scheme of things.

Remember to flush twice, LBG and the Molonglo need water.

Thanks. You will know I have stumbled on something if the men in black suites turn up and I am never seen again. Hang on a minute, someone is at the door……

That is an awesome map, p1! Hilarious!!

But if they use ‘community engagement’ instead of the fish stocking officer’s email they can tick that box and add it to a list – ‘see, we really do consult the community’.

Read the intruction on google. You can read. You know google.

The government could issue 2 commercial fishing licences.
Are there any studies about pollutants and fish in the lake?

I was always told the lakes quality problem stems from the fact that the topsoil was not scraped back when the lake was built. Is this true?

The real reason they don’t, of course, is that it would expose the Secret Bunker, and the tunnels that connect it to Parliament House and Russel. You know the one, it’s ventilation goes through the Carillion?

Offtopic I know, but how does one create such pretty Google map layers, p1?

Cod will eat baby cod. Its a fish eat fish lake.

My experience with fish has taught me thus: fish will eat anything they can fit in their mouths. Even if they are “vegetarian” they will still snack on smaller fish/dead fish/eggs/passing insects if they get the chance.

Would also be a great time for the bottom of the lakes to have some of the sediment removed, do any maintenance to dam walls and bridge pylons, etc. Might take a few years to refill right now though….

And to fish out all the dead bodies?

16,000 Murray cod fry = 1 humongous carp.

I assume that judicious use of gelignite will eradicate the carp before the Murray cod go in?

i commented on another post a while ago, that we should drain the lakes, use the water for household tanks, and allow the lakes to refill minus the carp. (use the carp as fertiliser or pig fodder)

sounds pretty good now to help the cod fry…

Is the water of high enough quality to produce edible Sea Kittens?

johnboy 12:51 pm 20 Jan 09

or to put it another way, not every little fishy gets to be a big fishy.

that’s an awful lot of fish for a little lake. Will there be enough stuff for them to eat? Murray Cods can grow to be pretty big.

Just so long as they only put back fish which are native to streams in the local area. Then arrest anyone who kills one because they are native wild life.
