16,000 Murray Cod into Lake Ginninderra

I understand the purpose of stocking the lakes is to protect the wild bred natives in their natural habitates by enticing fisherpersons to just fish the lakes. So Fisho, it seems you agree with major facets if Government policy on this issue.

Gives the yokels something to catch besides carp, even if only occasionally.

What an absolute waste of codlings.
Lake Gininderra is foul. It will make a dog sick from swimming in it. Anyone eating anything out of it will not remain in the gene pool for any length of time.

Still, those fingerlings will provide a good feed for the cormorants and redfin for a couple of days.

It would be far better if we had some fisheries enforcement, a no-take policy on wild bred natives (genetically worthless stocked clones are only good as put and take, so who cares) and something to reduce the silt, deepen ALL the lakes to stop them being carp specific breeding zones (Jerra wetlands, Upper Stranger pond, Gordon pond – anything southside really) and heavily snagged it to create native habitat.

Pity they didn’t stock them somewhere which has relatively decent water quality by ACT standards, such as Googong. Token gestures should be taken for what they are.

Canberra urban lakes are primarily there as pollution control mechanisms, secondly as a prettification exercise to please the lycra clad power sweaters, fish species sadly don’t rate at all in the Govt’s scheme of things.

Remember to flush twice, LBG and the Molonglo need water.

But if they use ‘community engagement’ instead of the fish stocking officer’s email they can tick that box and add it to a list – ‘see, we really do consult the community’.

Are there any studies about pollutants and fish in the lake?

I was always told the lakes quality problem stems from the fact that the topsoil was not scraped back when the lake was built. Is this true?

My experience with fish has taught me thus: fish will eat anything they can fit in their mouths. Even if they are “vegetarian” they will still snack on smaller fish/dead fish/eggs/passing insects if they get the chance.
