Shock! Horror! Chaser Skit Offends!

By jenny green - 4 April 2008 17

Interested to hear people’s reaction to the Chaser’s “you’re a terrible audience” skit in their [Canberra] shows last weekend.  I thought this was fairly typical Chaser fare, but someone at the show I was at was clearly offended and started yelling abuse back at them!  Why do people go to comedy shows but then take the content seriously?

[Ed – For those of us not aware of the skit, although I’m sure we can guess the general idea, can you give us a run down of it in detail, plus the reaction of the audience member who was lacking a sense of humor.]

What’s Your opinion?

Yes, far be it for anyone to have reasonable expectations and not have them met. You should all enter a soporific slave state like CanberraResident suggests.

Overall, I went in happy but left a bit disappointed.

You choose how you feel.

The internet dating sketch was recycled from their previous shows.

I love Chas’s Internet Dating bit – it was hilarious.

If you walk in with a negative mindset … you’ll walk away displeased. If you walk in with a positive mindset … you’ll walk away happy. You are in control of your thoughts, feelings and experiences. You tell yourself it’s crap, it will be.

To the heckler … smile mate, it’s not that difficult, and besides, you’ll live a more fulfilling, happy and productive life if you do.

Socrates out.

I went to the very first show and loved it. I am going again in May. Didn’t happen in my show. Certainly the guy needs to get a sense of humour. If people don’t like the chaser or their style of comedy… Don’t go. You paid $50 for a show that you are not going to enjoy.

So…why did you bother going?

I’m sure it’s some peoples humour, but I only got one laugh at the show – and it was more at the subject than the joke. Mind you I’m not a fan of their show either. The group just reminds me of when I’d piss around with my uni mates. It was hilarious to have a few beers and act like idiots back then. And still would be. But a whole show? Nah, I wasn’t pissed, I’m not at uni anymore and it wasn’t scripted very well (pub jokes are great in pubs – but a little more intelligence is needed for a road show). But to each their own.

So do The Chaser go after Rudd et al now, or is it still all about Johnny Howard?

Yep. Of course it will take months before there is enough material to easily pick on the persona of Rudd, we had Howard and his persona for years making him an easy target.

Lets just say “twerp” “nerd” and “which translated from mandarin means….” are going to get used an awful lot over the year.

No. The plants they did have were obvious and more involved. I think bd84 is right on the money.

Jonathon Reynolds 11:18 pm 04 Apr 08

I wasn’t there… but as other comedians often do… it may have been be a plant in the audience (for added comedic effect)

bd84 10:50 pm 04 Apr 08

well canberra is well known for its people who lack a sense of humor.

Cameron 10:49 pm 04 Apr 08

The finale is a song about how rubbish the audience is and how they love that they’ve scammed us all and can sell us merchandise.

Quite funny, and any idiot that was offended by it is exactly that – an idiot.
