Perhaps Canberra's Most Decently Priced Petrol

Here I am banging on about petrol prices again…so I expect the usual slagging from the usual suspects – whatever!

As a motorist who actually cares about saving some money on fuel – particularly now that the prices are on the way back up again (I told you so), I’ll always keep an eye out for fellow RA’ers who want to save a quid on petrol.

The Mobil in Melba was recommended to me a couple of weeks ago as a place that offers very competitive prices. After initially paying not too much attention to the suggestion and putting it down to a short term grab for money by the service station, I’ve had reason to drive past the station on a few occasions over the last 2 weeks since I last filled up. They are always cheaper than anywhere else I see.

When I needed to fill up today, I drove past Charny where I usually fill up and saw the discount E10 for $121.99 per litre. I took the chance to duck by Melba on the way to work and paid $112.99 per litre, without any discount needed). Based on the almost 70 litre fill I saved over $6.

After chatting to the dude at the register, he said that Mobil often have more room to discout their petrol whenever they can. He also said that for over the last month, they’ve consistently been the cheapest outlet in the ACT.

If you live nearby, reward not only yourself, but an outlet actually doing the right thing by customers. Buy your petrol at Mobil in Melba.

Buy a diesel and run it on takeaway used chip fat. As long as you filter it properly, it works like a dream. Just don’t tell anyone you’re doing it.

Woolworth’s at Hughes shops $1.15. Woolworth’s Mawson $0.95, Mobil Mawson $0.95. Spooky!

Yes, Mobil Mawson is my usual filling station. Generally about 10c/litre cheaper than the servos in Phillip.

I’d go and buy a barrel of oil and refine it myself if it cost $120/L lol

I paid 90.9 on Wednesday arvo (5pm ish) at Caltex in Greenway.

Petrol now 128.9 everywhere.

I find that on Thursdays when all the Coleworths stations implement their expoitative price jumps of 20c/L or more, the Melba Mobil’s E10 is usually about 15c/L cheaper than they are.

the idea of driving further afield or queueing for ages to save $2 on petrol seems daft to me and like a false economy in many circumstances.

It’s called “The Annabel Principle”

My car seems to think so. Idles rough on Shell, even the ultra premium stuff. Mobil is the shiz as far as my car is concerned.

In reality, probably not a lot. My understanding is the refining is done by a handful of companies anyway. For example, Mobil has a refinery, Caltex has a refinery, Shell has a refinery etc, etc, but they are spread around the country and even though you’re buying Shell petrol it may have been refined by Mobil/Caltex/whoever.

However, I do believe most companies put in their proprietary additives post refinery. The additives turn regular BP into Ultimate, and regular Caltex into Vortex 98 and so on (our cars require 98RON). The innernets told me that the Shell additives are bad, mmkay.*

*I make no claims to the accuracy of this statement, it could be a load of cobblers for all I know and I suggest you take this reply with a grain of salt.

Shell Curtin often seems to be competitively priced. Doesn’t concern me as I am a fuel snob and don’t buy Shell.

I’m with you Steve_Pedestrian, I have often found Spence Mobil to be one of the cheapest on that side of Canberra, and perfect for hubby and I as we can duck in with a short detour off the Barton highway on our way home.

I can’t say I really pay attention to petrol prices. The Caltex just down the road gets a visit whenever the car needs petrol, though we try to avoid Tuesdays because the queues are ridiculous. Perhaps it is because we have a small car and do very little driving (20 mins each way to work and back each day), but the idea of driving further afield or queueing for ages to save $2 on petrol seems daft to me and like a false economy in many circumstances.

I generally support my local bloke at the Lyneham servo (Caltex) and figure the extra couple of bucks it might cost me is better in his pocket than that of a larger station.

Mobil in Wanniassa have been selling unleaded for around 95 cents per litre for the last few weeks. I haven’t had a need to drive past there in the last couple of days, but it was 94.9cents/litre on Wednesday morning.

Spence Mobil, which I believe is run by the same guy, is also very good in terms of being cheaper than others in the area.

Thank – yes sorry Skid, major typo, but I’m sure you all know what I mean. Never been that good with decimals 😛

The Mobil at Giralang is usually several cents cheaper than the supermarket mobs in both Belco and Gunners for the same reason I suspect. Often beating their “discounted” price.

Agree with the idea that by supporting the people who don’t inflate so they can discount we in a small way send a message to the market.

I pay about one percent of that price ($1.129/L, or 112.9cents per litre, or about $75 for the tank) elsewhere. Methinks you made a typo.
