Canberra Botanical is an exhibition of painting of a range of botanical specimens.

So like, lots of flowers.

It’s taking place at CSIRO Discovery and is open throughout the latter half of September.

What started as an exhibition of the works of local artists has now expanded to include entries from the ACT, Victoria, NSW, Western Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and New Zealand.

Exhibition Committee President, Wendy Antoniak says, ‘Credit for its popularity goes to the artists who now submit works for this juried exhibition, many of them among the most respected botanical artists from around Australia and overseas.’

CSIRO Discovery was selected as the venue for Canberra Botanical because of the traditional links between botanical art and science.

‘CSIRO Discovery’s support of the Canberra Botanical exhibition has added to its success in encouraging an appreciation of this historically significant and beautiful art form within the community,’ commented Dr Guy Micklethwait, Manager of Public Programs at CSIRO Discovery.

The organisers of Canberra Botanical, along with special guest, Dr Judy West, the Director of the Australian National Botanical Gardens, will launch the tenth Canberra Botanical.

The exhibition brings together both amateur and practicing artists who have a special interest in botanical art. The artists seek to portray plants in exacting but exciting paintings.

Canberra Botanical is an exhibition that has been run by committed botanic artists, and has always had the support of the CSIRO Discovery Centre. The exhibition usually coincides with Canberra’s Floriade. There is an important place for botanical art, both as art and as a tool to assist botanists and horticulturalists, and for this reason it is very important that botanical art continues to flourish and be recognised.
