The thing is that he has his get out clause, that was triggered when Furner got the boot. I don’t know exactly when he could exercise it (November?), but the Raiders keeping him on the sidelines wasn’t an option – as much as I’d have loved to have seen it.

I hope that given that he didn’t have a chance to leave on his own terms, and was sacked, that the NRL will be in a better position to sanction him. Ferguson’s made it so easy for them, that if the NRL doesn’t act, every single player will know that their contract is worth nothing. All they need to do to play for another club is go AWOL, wait for their club to sack them, then resign with someone else.

The NRL is a business, and surely the people running the clubs are seeing how divisive and bad for business players like Ferguson are. It’s a team sport, and if your one gifted but troubled player has enough impact that their team mates don’t play to their best, then the Ferguson’s in the game are going to finally be viewed as a liability. At least that’s my hope. I love rugby league, but I hate seeing so many of the game’s headlines sucked up by tosspots like this.

That’s if the NRL don’t decide to sanction him as well.

At some stage they’ll have to make an example of someone. May as well start with this ego maniac.

I don’t know why they think so highly of themselves, the game throws up these special talents all the time. Good players have a 2 or 3 year purple patch, it’s only champions that maintain that form for longer, and a champion he is not.
