As we work into the new year we present four great parking pictures from each month.

December gave us:

1) This year has been characterised by an epic battle between Jamison and Woden for the title of Worst Parking Locale in Canberra. Shirty Bear brought home the year for Jammo:

2) Lyshious staked a claim for Dickson:

3) Nouse found a goody for the Canberra Centre:

4) Katie finished out the year with this magnificent effort.

And that’s the end of a year in bad parking.

Thank you all, keep sending them in to images@the-riotact.com .

The new spaces (illustrated at #2) do not allow for this.

The driver parking in the accessible bay is actually allowed to park partially on the yellow marked section, leaving room on the other side if necessary.

Unfortunately not many realise this, and the differently marked section in the middle becomes a magnet for idiots.
The Standard requires a bollard to be installed in the middle to prevent this, but bollards don’t last long, and/or that requirement is often ignored.

So if I am to get this right somebody fixed a problem that does not exist, and in the process created a new set of problems (and exceptions to rules) that are most easily solved by returning to the old system? Genius!

… area between two accessible parking bays which should be kept clear to allow access….
Whomever at Standards Australia came up with this new standard needs a stern speaking to.

Seconded. The previous system with wider spaces (shown at #4 with moron parked over dividing line) allowed those who can actually park a car to align their car on the far left or far right of the parking space, thereby allowing room for the disabled permit holder to get in or out of their car depending on whether they are seated on the passenger or drivers side of the car. This was very handy when transporting someone who is wheelchair bound. The new spaces (illustrated at #2) do not allow for this.

I thought it was just a way to convert existing car parking bays into a disabled parking area without having to remove existing bay markings?

Given what happened to legally-parked 2 you have to be sympathetic, don’t you?

Umm.. Two is not legally parked – it’s parked on the area between two accessible parking bays which should be kept clear to allow access….

4. Was really really disabled.

3. was just trying to avoid being scratched by other cars. What’s the problem? (Sarcasm alert.)

And 4. probably too.

Given what happened to legally-parked 2 you have to be sympathetic, don’t you?
