ACT Book of the year

As someone who dreams of being a writer – you know, the kind who writes novels that everyone talks about over their cups of tea in the office and get adapted into brilliant movies with action figure heroes, I was quite interested to see the outcome of the ACT Book for the year for 2013.

I must say I was quite surprised when the award ($10,000 thanks for coming) went to Frank Bongiorno for his ‘The Sex Lives of Australians – a history’, which delves into the changing attitudes and experiences of Australians since European settlement.

I’m intrigued and am ready for a good read and quietly (or not so quietly) impressed with the judging panel choosing something that may (as with our gorgeous skywhale) spark some healthy debate and discussion from our community.

The annual award was judged by a number of awarded and recognized local authors and academics and the winner was also shortlisted for the 2013 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards, although I must question whether old Tony would be reading such things… perhaps the Archie comics would be better suited.
