We’re now more than halfway through summer, so I thought I’d share some ideas for one of my favourite summer activities – drinks with friends on a warm summer’s evening.
I’ve picked five places (in no particular order) that will allow you to bask in this gorgeous weather with a drink in hand and some friends in tow.
5. Knightsbridge Penthouse
Knightsbridge Penthouse was well-established in Braddon long before the area was cool and, as a result, have a pretty good name for serving up some of the best cocktails in town. What I didn’t know until recently was that they also have a cute little courtyard out back, perfect for a few cocktails on a warm summer’s night. Find out more: www.knightsbridgepenthouse.com.au
4. Honkytonks
Located in Garema Place, Honkytonks is a laid-back bar with the longest list of tequila going round and a menu of delicious Mexican treats. They also have a good range of beers on tap and do a mean white wine sangria by the jug. Did someone say tequila? Find out more: drinkhonkytonks.com.au
3. Mint Garden Bar
Mint Garden Bar can be found in the heritage gardens of the Gorman House Arts Centre in Braddon. It’s the younger, more relaxed sister to the ever popular, little bit fancy, restaurant Sage. This is one for those who want to relax amongst the gardens with a cocktail in hand at sunset. Find out more: www.sagerestaurant.net.au/mint-garden-bar
2. The Highball Express
The Highball Express is the new bar that has already made quite a splash. Make your way up the staircase in Odgers Lane behind the Melbourne Building in the City and you’ll find yourself whisked away to a Cuban summer. They specialise in rum cocktails and if you’re in a group, I recommend trying some punch from the cute little punch trolley named Peggy. Find out more: www.highballexpress.com.au
1. Hopscotch
Back in Braddon, there’s a not so little bar called Hopscotch. With a big outdoor area out the front, it fills up very quickly come Friday afternoon. The best bit is that all summer long they are serving up a range of drinks they’re calling “Popscotch Poptails” – it’s an alcoholic popsicle topped with moscato wine. You can choose from orange and mango, gin and tonic or fruit punch. I’ll take two. Find out more: www.hopscotchbar.com.au
