The cars have roared into town for our annual Summernats event, promising four days of fun, fumes and fire. If you’re keen for something a little more mellow, head to the Arboretum for live music, a matinee showing of Peter Pan at the Belconnen Theatre or Portobello Road at the Old Bus Depot Markets. Or escape completely to the beautiful Great Barrier Reef (in a Virtual Reality of course).

Since 1988 the Summernats Car Festival has brought a ton of car lovin’ fun to Canberra. More than 1800 street machines will rock up to a 100,000+ crowd at Exhibition Park. Enjoy perusing the best in motoring products and services from an array of exhibitors, before visiting the Kids Club, watching burn outs, enjoying the Body Ink Competition or the Supercruise, or catching a live show. It all begins Thursday at noon with the City Cruise. Tickets are available at the gate or on the Summernats website at a discount. Kids 10 and under are free. Parking is available for $10.
David Attenborough’s Virtual Reality Experiences

After a super successful showing at the Australian Museum in Sydney, David Attenborough’s Virtual Reality Experiences have come to Canberra. Immerse yourself in the first two natural history documentaries ever designed for Virtual Reality: the first glimmerings of life on earth, and a breathtaking underwater tour of the Great Barrier Reef. Using the latest in Virtual Reality technology, this is an experience you won’t want to miss. Allow up to 60 minutes for the experience. Enjoy the serenity of the National Arboretum into the early evening as they extend trading hours for the café, bonsai collection and gift shop for three Fridays this month. Sip your drink and sway to the jazz sounds of Kooky Fandango, performing on the northern deck this Friday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. You can also partake in a free guided Fire and Water walk and learn about the origins of the Arboretum from the bush fires of 2001 and 2003, plus see some very rare trees from Australia and north Africa. With opening night completely sold out, you won’t want to miss this weekend’s matinee showings of Peter Pan the Musical. This enchanting rendition of the British stage version by Piers Chater-Robinson features a cast of 35 performers with wonderful music and staging to delight the whole family. It’s suitable for all ages and is the perfect school holiday treat. Tickets are from $25, available online.
East Hotel Canberra Challenger

Love tennis? Just a week before the Australian Open 2017, the East Hotel Canberra Challenger gives some of the world’s top players the perfect opportunity to prepare with a $75,000 professional tennis tournament at the Canberra Tennis Centre. Last year it attracted ten top 100 male players with 32 players going on to compete at the Australian Open 2016 in singles, doubles, and junior events. The Old Bus Depot Markets returns with a favourite event – Portobello Road. Fossick through an eclectic mix of quirky and interesting treasures. The fun is in the hunt as you never know what you might find amongst the stalls. Rummage through a stack of old suitcases, funky lamp shades, tea cups and saucers and ceramic and glass flying ducks to decorate your home. Retro decorative art blends with antique jewellery, china and art glass, silver, linens and restored pieces. Entry is free.
