Popular local photography business Another Happy Customer, run by veteran photographer Michelle Kroll, has rebranded to AHC Studios – opening a brand new studio in a double-storey warehouse in Mitchell.
Michelle, who began as a photographer in the Air Force in 1991, developed her reputation as a corporate photographer while running media production company Dynamic Media, and servicing the Australian Defence Force and Defence Industry from offices in Canberra and Brisbane.
But her whole outlook on the business changed when her 11 year old son Thomas began asking how to become a photographer.
“I didn’t want him to feel like he had to be a photographer, so when he’d ask I would usually just say, ‘You can be anything you want to be!’ But he kept asking, until one day a friend said to me ‘C’mon Michelle…he really wants to learn! How could you not teach him?’ So I started taking his requests seriously and his training began. Having been a photographer in the military I’m very meticulous, so it can’t have been easy having me as his teacher!”
But Thomas remained serious about his chosen career path, so Michelle sold her business and set up Another Happy Customer as a partnership for her and Thomas.
Six years on, the mother and son duo are doing exceptionally well, with a long list of clients including Lifeline, Communities at Work, ACT Health, the Brumbies, and an abundance of small to medium-sized businesses. Michelle remains the lead photographer for portraits and events, while Thomas has found his niche in product and food photography.
“His passion for his work is inspiring,” says Michelle. “And after working under my wing for 6 years and training for many more, I’m not surprised when clients remark at the quality of his work.
“I’d encourage any parent whose child wants to follow in their footsteps to really consider it. There’s an opportunity there to foster a passion, and help them get an early start in something that could give them such an advantage in the future. I never thought I would go into business with my son, but here we are, and I couldn’t be happier or prouder.”
Michelle and Thomas will officially launch the new Mitchell studio in September when the fitout is complete, but the business is already operating from there and Michelle is keen to have clients – old and new – see it for themselves.
“We’ve served so many wonderful clients over the past 6 years under Another Happy Customer, and we’re still the same team, just a different location and a new brand name (AHC Studios).”
