Choosing an engagement ring for his future wife can be one of the most difficult decisions a man ever has to make.
And it’s important he gets it right, because his partner has to wear it on her hand forever, right?
The team at Unique Diamonds in Canberra has plenty of advice for fellas trying to choose the perfect ring – and some handy hints for the special women in their lives.
If you and your partner have discussed tying the knot, there’s likely a proposal on the horizon and a ring on the cards, so how do you ensure the ring is just right?
Ladies, you can drop some subtle and not-so-subtle hints about the style of ring you like. That can be sharing photos of your fav bling from Instagram, Tik Tok or Pinterest, or commenting on the engagement rings of friends and family.
Unique Diamonds general manager Mia Somerville says, nowadays, most women have their dream engagement ring in mind and there are plenty of ways to point their partner in the right direction before he gets down on one knee.
“The last thing women want is to end up with a ring that’s not the style, stone shape or colour they would like,” she says.
Dropping hints can help. Like telling your partner how much you like your friend’s white gold vintage halo ring, or drooling over your sister’s princess trilogy ring – but pointing out that it would look great in gold!
“I think women are getting pretty inventive in the way they drop hints, by sending Tik Toks to their partner, links to photos or even tagging their partner on our Facebook page,” Mia says.
“I don’t think the hints are very subtle at the moment – the ladies are saying this is what I want, I want it soon, go and get it sorted.”
Mia says most men prefer to have a good idea about what their partner likes, and often come into the Unique Diamonds studio armed with photos and ideas and feeling confident about their purchase.
“We get a lot of men that come in really happy that they know exactly what their partner likes, and we can help them choose or design the perfect piece based on that knowledge,” she says.
“A man that knows exactly what his partner wants is our dream client.”
The team can sit down and help custom design a ring, or you can browse through a variety of beautiful designs in store.
“We can turn an idea into a masterpiece. The sky is the limit when it comes to designing that special ring,” Mia says.
While the guys might have an insight into their girl’s style, they often have no idea about ring size.
“That’s the hardest thing.
“When the men know what they want, but they don’t know their partner’s ring size. So it’s important that they find out.”
Mia says the bride-to-be will often pop into the studio with her friends and point out to staff some of the rings she likes, and provide her ring size. Her man will come in at a later date and make his choice from her favourite designs. That way he still gets to choose, and she gets a surprise!
However, while many men love to buy a ring and woo their partner with a romantic proposal, she says 90 per cent of couples come into the studio and choose the ring together.
“Getting married is an exciting time for everyone, and I think it’s nice that a couple can share the joy of selecting or designing the perfect engagement ring.
“Most people nowadays have already had the conversation about getting married, so choosing a ring doesn’t have to be a big secret.
“It’s such a big purchase too, that I think it’s nice to involve the women because the ring design is such a personal decision – I’m sure any man would hate for his partner to not like it.”
Once they’ve chosen the ring together, the woman can leave it up to her partner to plan the big surprise proposal.
There are so many engagement ring designs, ranging from simple and contemporary to vintage styles, with dozens of diamond shapes, colours and cuts, and a selection of white, yellow or rose gold, silver or platinum settings to choose from.
“The two most popular at the moment are definitely a thin, dainty band with a round, oval or radiant cut solitaire, and the classic diamond set in a pave band,” Mia says.
