The Canberra Cavalry and Canberra Milk are stepping up to the plate against domestic violence with a new partnership this 2017-18 Australian Baseball League season to support the Domestic Violence Crisis Service.
Every Canberra Cavalry strike-out against the Perth batter this weekend will mean money in the bank for the DVCS.
Canberra Cavalry Chief Executive Officer Donn McMichael said that with a number of new pitchers on the roster, the club thought it would put them to good use.
“Each time one of our pitches score a strike-out at our home series against Perth this weekend, Canberra Milk will donate $500 to DVCS. We are honoured to be involved in this capacity and our guys are thrilled to be part of this initiative.”
Canberra Milk Managing Director David Tyack said the Domestic Violence Crisis Service provided an incredibly important service to the local community and Canberra Milk had been a proud supporter for two years.
“We are happy to continue that support into 2018. This year we are continuing to provide them with financial and non-financial support, but with a twist.”
DVCS Chief Executive Officer, Mirjana Wilson said the organisation was grateful for the support again in 2018 from Canberra Milk and was looking forward to working with Canberra Cavalry.
“I hope the Canberra community can help to support the team and help push as many strike-outs as possible. To be honest, I’m going to have to brush up on my baseball knowledge, but I am excited to learn and hope I can encourage others to get along to the games this weekend,” Ms Wilson said.
“This is also a great opportunity for DVCS to receive exposure to a group of people who might not have otherwise been exposed to the work we do, or indeed that we exist.”
Ms Wilson said DVCS had already spent its budget allocation from the ACT Government for emergency accommodation this financial year, so the donation was incredibly important.
“We will always aim to put someone into emergency accommodation if that is what is required, with the immediate safety of all family members being the first priority,” she said.
Ms Wilson said the non-financial support the organisation received from initiatives like this was also invaluable, in particular as DVCS moved into its busiest time of the year.
“It is a perfect time to share this great news,” she said.
Canberra Cavalry play the Perth Heat this weekend – Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7 pm and the final game on Sunday 17 December at 2 pm at the MIT Ballpark in Narrabundah. For more information, visit their Facebook page.
