On Saturday 08-APR-06 we did the Civic Public Art Walking Tour and lived to tell the tale.
And so, I present to you item # 4, Egle Queen of Serpents by Ieva Pocius. It is in Glebe Park and was a bicentennial gift from the Lithuanian community so please no complaints about your tax dollar. Lithuanians have a rich and some what disturbing folklore and this statue represents a woman who married the King of Sea Serpents, regretted the marriage and tried to return to land only to be punished by being turned into a tree. The whole episode is so obscure even the wikipedia has no entry on it. Is it meant to be a warning to anglo-australia that there’s no going home? Feel free to suggest other possible meanings.
