Right in the heart of Civic on Northbourne Ave, wedged between the Novotel Hotel Canberra, the Jolimont Centre and the chemist on the corner is a set of imposing wooden doors. Open those doors and be transported into the captivating space of White Rabbit Cocktail Room, inspired by the much-loved novel, Alice in Wonderland. Upon falling down the ‘rabbit hole’, you’ll enter a magical space complete with mystery and intrigue. Think dark cosy nooks with plush walls, bespoke liquor cabinets, velvet booths and an endless bar.

White Rabbit Cocktail Room has created a hideaway in the heart of the city with a focus on fun, a little bit of theatre and a playful list of whimsical cocktails. Since opening three years ago, it has become a much-loved venue for a night out but now they are putting their own ‘curiouser and curiouser’ twist on the traditional high tea called ‘Tipsy Tea’.

The unforgettable experience at Tipsy Tea combines a little bit of charisma and a touch of character and is available every Saturday and Sunday from 2- 5 pm. Since White Rabbit Cocktail Room is not your average bar, owner Nick Tuckwell has a pastry chef on board who helped design a delectable two-course menu.

To eat, you are greeted by a 3-tier platter with an array of flavoursome, savoury starter bites which include spiced pork sausage roll, asparagus wrapped prosciutto (which was our personal favourite), smoked salmon and cream cheese pinwheel sandwiches, roast chicken, apple & walnut sandwiches and semi-dried tomato & caramelised onion tart.

To round out the experience, the second course is a decadent and generous array of sweet treats including, a selection of macaroons, sour rhubarb & marshmallow tarts, dark chocolate & peanut brownies with salted caramel icing, gourmet cinnamon sugar and raspberry jam doughnuts, double chocolate cookies and raspberry & white chocolate cupcakes.

For the ‘tipsy’ part of the ‘tea’, each course is paired with your choice of luscious libation. These are signature cocktails – many of which contain tea and are ceremoniously poured from a stylish teapot into a dainty cup and saucer. The libations include a fruity strawberry vermouth, Beefeater gin, vanilla, lemon juice and grapefruit bitters, topped with French sparkling wine, or the pretty apricot coloured Blanco tequila, apricot liqueur, T2 French Earl Grey tea, cinnamon bark, syrup, lemon juice and a dash of Angostura bitters or the Woodford Reserve bourbon, peach liqueur, spiced vanilla syrup topped with iced T2 French Earl Grey tea cocktail.

Also on offer is a Pimms Cup Cocktail: Pimms number 1, fresh lemon, orange, cucumber, strawberries topped with ginger ale & lemon or a Bloody Mary: Vodka, tomato juice, Tabasco, Worcestershire, lemon, cucumber, mint, olives & house spices. If cocktails aren’t your thing, you can enjoy your meal with the very best French sparkling wine, tea or coffee.
