The 50-metre outdoor pool in Woden will live on … for a few more seasons, at least.

After months of speculation, Geocon has confirmed its plans for the high-profile site between Melrose Drive and Irving Street, and there’s bittersweet news.

Canberra’s biggest developer bought the site in early January 2023 across the road from its WOVA development, and immediately, the likes of the Woden Valley Community Council and ‘Save Phillip Pool’ lobby group feared the public pool would be sacrificed for apartments.

Under the site’s lease conditions, Geocon is required to maintain some sort of pool, and it has now confirmed what this would look like.

The first of three stages of construction will include two 13-storey towers made up of 286 apartments, as well as a rooftop outdoor entertainment area for residents.

In stage one, on the ground floor, there’ll be a public aquatic centre with a 25-metre, eight-lane indoor lap pool as its centrepiece.

Geocon says it will also be accompanied by a splash pad, learn-to-swim area, toddlers’ swimming area, leisure swimming area, “program pool with relaxation area”, a steam and sauna room, café, as well as an outdoor water play/splash pad and entertainment area.

The first of four levels of basement parking will also be allocated to pool users, with 54 car spaces available.

Stages 2 and 3 will then follow, at which point the current 50-metre pool will be “decommissioned” to make way for additional towers.

“We’ve carefully considered the way the project’s going to be staged, so once the new aquatic facility is built and delivered, we can then decommission the 50-metre outdoor pool,” senior development manager Jack Ison says.

“Basically, the whole emphasis has been trying to keep as many of the community facilities online as possible.

“We’re expecting construction may take up to 20 months so the outdoor pool will remain open for another few seasons.”

COX Architecture has been contracted for the design and Arcadia for the landscaping, while Geocon will also talk with MLEI Consulting Engineers, which has “very extensive experience with aquatic facilities”.

Mr Ison says they’re making a conscious effort to “let in as much natural light as possible” by including glazing all around the sides and a large skylight over the 25-metre pool, looking up between the two towers.

The outdoor area will also include seating options and an area for sunbathers set among trees and lawn.

Meanwhile, it will be “business as usual” for the Phillip Ice-Skating Centre for the foreseeable future, at least until Tuggeranong’s new ice-skating centre, the Canberra Arena, eventuates.

Since purchasing it, Geocon has made “significant improvements” to the Phillip facility, including upgraded grandstands and new signage.

“We’re just trying to make the place better – we’re putting a lot of effort into that,” Mr Ison says.

“And we’ve received a fair bit of community feedback that the guys there are doing a pretty good job.”

The development application will be released for public feedback on 21 November on the ACT Government’s Planning website.

This article shows us the decision to vary the lease from a 50m to 25m pool shows the government’s lack transparency and integrity. Phillip is the last outdoor pool servicing Woden, Weston and Tuggeranong. It was busy with families and lap swimming all weekend. With the climate heading up are we all to diverge on Dickson pool? Our MLAs are public servants so they need to start serving all of our communities. Time to do a land swap and give Geocon another site for housing

What’s happening with Alexander and Albermarle ex govt building in Phillip being turned into residential property, or are AFP still using to train in.

@neil these have been inhabited by residents for a few years now.

Geocon project .its a pool so probably best it leaks.

First time I have seen a sentence using Reverse Polish notation!

This thread is overrun by boomers whinging about housing being created for young people in a housing crisis. Typical entitled boomers and your self centred attitudes. Sure geocon have their flaws but they are at least providing housing to thousands of people in this city that thanks to the actions (or inaction) of the boomer populace are facing extreme trouble housing despite working twice as hard as you all.

No garden centre? Are you kidding me?

I’m not a boomer and the argument isn’t about providing more housing or not.

It’s about poor planning and the degradation of community facilities in many areas of the city.

We definitely need more housing but it shouldn’t come at a significant loss of amenity for residents.

Stereotyping and assumptions without a solid basis, not smart.

Well done Act Government, you have really made a major impact to Woden. I am not sure how you can ruin it even more; maybe building a concrete wall around Woden and keeping everyone out? It is a lasting legacy you are creating.

Not only have we lost most of the sporting facilities in Woden we no longer have a hardware store, a garden centre and green space is disappearing at an alarming rate and we have never had an ALDI. We are second class citizens the municipal services are non-existent. The rates are skyrocketing but no services!

Guarantee that some Labor stooge will write in & say that providing sporting facilities is not a Government responsibility.

Are there any of our community facilities left in Woden for the government to sell off to developers or poker machine clubs?
We’ve lost almost every sports facility from the district.

Well done Labor.
This completes the total butchering of sporting facilities in the Woden area.

It is concerning to see the approval of another pool project by this developer, especially considering the issues with pools they have built in there current development. which have been leaking and out of use for over 3.5 years. These unresolved problems have led to legal action by owners’ corporations which are still o going. When will the government hold developers accountable instead of awarding them more work, especially when they’re very well aware of the issues of this developer.

And who is remotely surprised by this further loss of community facilities in the Woden area.

Moar apartments.

good lord….Geocon….”the pool will live on”….“We’re just trying to make the place better” – which place?…this brand is so tainted…. and what about replacing a 50m pool with a 50m pool….I guess whomever is making these decisions is making good money, but doesn’t swim.

Is this an advertisement?

Certainly looks like one. It reads very differently from most of what I’ve heard from people living in the area. Marketing spin.
