Btw – Johnboy, how does a union official entering a site to check safety equal ‘unions making pests of themselves until all the employees on a site are paying union dues can look a bit like a protection racket at times’?

In no way am I sticking up for the union (they need to look at the safety standards of their own ‘initiatives’ before they look into others), I just think the facts need to be checked before people make ill-informed comment.

In this case the union asked for a barrier to be put up so workers couldn’t fall from a height while concrete was being poured. Clearly the contractors aren’t that worried about workers falling from the bridge during construction. If this was your place of work how would you feel about there not being a safety barrier?

The problems with the GDE bridge were design related rather than construction related, and certainly not related to performance of those doing the concrete pour.

The union official broke into a construction site and potentially created a dangerous situation where no evidence of one existed previously. He should be charged with trespass.

That commie Union Boss should be locked up. The caring and professional contractors and responsible authorities do a wonderful job in ensuring that workers are as safe as if they were in their mother’s arms. They’d never let profit stand in the way of safety – to even suggest such a thing is an insult to those fine people.

I’d suggest that, given this company actually damaged a dozen employees only the other day, it’s entirely in order for the union to investigate. And, as I will be using that bit of road daily, I feel somewhat reassured knowing that the union is keeping an eye on things.

Unions don’t pester people to join.
