Can’t say I have posted anything in a suburban post box in many a year. Still get a surprising amount of mail coming in though, even after getting as many bills as possible through teh interwebs.

Surely eBay has been a godsend for Aussie Post? We now use the local postbox more than ever before.

Well I use them for sending small prepaid satchels/parcels. Beats waiting in line at the post office.

But you can certainly fit more than letters (which yes will become a thing of the past with electronic communications booming) into those boxes. Lord knows how many other people do the same with the letterboxes though.

I found it jarring to think that the bright shiny one is what future generations won’t recognise.

Indeed! Soon people will be able to teleport parcels from one location to another.

There’ll be no need for the postal service in 2050.

The middle box is used to store mail for a delivery area so the postie doesn’t have to ride all the way back to the Post Office/Mail Centre to collect more. Once he/she has delivered all the mail they can carry on their bike for a certain number of streets, they return to this point to pick up further loads.

There are plenty of these spread around Canberra, often quite close to local shops.

I mean all of the mail, not the main. Curse Dyslexia!

It is an Australia Post run box. Your postie can’t fit all of the main in their postie bike so their run is split up and some of it dropped from vans into boxes like that one along the run. The posties unlock the boxes and refill their panniers with the main. It is all pre-sorted so that it is in order for the next part of their delivery run.

Mailbags are dropped into there by Australia Post trucks. Mailmen (oops, mailpeople) then collect their mailbags from within and deliver the contents.

De meedle one, senor, he ees de mailman area box, he use for putting in da bulk mail for da man on da putt putt red step-thru to collect hees allocation for each pannier and bag, and then he come back for more, just like Pepe.
