Subaru Canberra has donated a sparkly new car to the Cancer Council ACT for use in a job that sees plenty of kilometres travelled every day, helping to reduce the impact and incidence of cancer in the local community.
The 2021 Subaru XV removes the need for many of the Cancer Council staff members to use their own private cars, and comes with eye-catching branding to boot.
Cancer Council ACT Business Development Manager Amanda Fintan has been working with the Cancer Council for 18 months and saw the need for a car almost immediately.
“We’re always travelling – whether it’s collaborating with nursing staff to support patients through treatment in Canberra’s medical facilities, or providing education programs in workplaces and schools on the dangers of sun and tobacco – we’re always out in the community,” she says.
Amanda reached out to Jon Dudok, the dealer principal at Subaru Canberra in Philip, formerly trading as Rolfe Subaru before becoming part of the Janrule Automotive Group.

The new XV will be theirs for 12 months, and Subaru Canberra stands ready to supply an additional car for another program the Cancer Council has in the pipeline called “Transport to Treatment”.
Amanda hopes this new program will help to satisfy the ever-present need for patient transport in the ACT.
“There are many people in the community who are not able to get to treatment and if they are, they’re relying on family members or friends, who then have to take time off from their other responsibilities.”
Amanda experienced this for herself three years ago when having to ferry her husband to and from treatment, all while working and looking after the kids.
“It’s really hard to juggle, especially when it’s an ongoing – sometimes even daily – course of treatment such as is the case with chemotherapy, radiation, and other specialist appointments.”
She hopes to see this new service up and running within about six months. In the meantime, she says the car will definitely get its fair share of work.
“All our staff are so grateful for Subaru Canberra’s very generous support,” Amanda says. “There’s going to be dibs on who gets the car each day. Previously, they used to drive their own cars, but there’s a lot of excitement knowing that we now have our own vehicle, and a very safe one at that.”
Jon and Subaru Canberra had been waiting for the right community partner to come along and have been involved with the Cancer Council ACT since July 2021.
“A lot of people have been touched by their work, and it’s a very worthy cause,” Jon says.
They first came on board as a Gold Sponsor for this year’s gala event which was subsequently curtailed by COVID-19 restrictions.
For Daffodil Day on 27 August 2021, Subaru Canberra also agreed to donate $100 to the Cancer Council ACT for every new car sold in August, while also throwing in free window tint with UV protection.
