Any experience with Canberra garden clubs?

On a more constructive note, I forgot to mention COGS aka Canberra Organic Growers Society.

If you have any interest in food growing, Permablitz ACT is a very practical gardening club. As the name suggests, they encourage permaculture principles and do weekend blitzes on each others yards to set up edible gardens. They have a monthly meeting to discuss upcoming blitzes and hear about completed ones. Website is http://permablitzact.com/

I’ve been to a couple of meetings and one blitz. The members were very friendly with a range of ages, and I learned some interesting things at the blitz that I’ve since used in my own garden.

I’d suggest turning up to gatherings and finding out. After all, I might have a view that one particular group are snooty and pretentious, while you might think they are wonderfully cultured and refined. These things are subjective 🙂

In addition to the Horticultural Society, there is the Canberra Organic Growers Society who specialise in Organic gardening, and run a few community gardens scattered around the Canberra landscape. In terms of getting to meet people with similar interests, joining a community garden would be a great start, IMHO.

… and… on their links page… http://hsoc.org.au/pages/links.htm there appears to be three affiliated garden clubs. Not sure what the go is, but they are imaginatively called The First, the Second, and The Third Canberra Garden Clubs. I reckon that’s what you’re after.

The main garden club in Canberra, since Canberra began, is the Horticultural Society.

I believe they have some sub-groups now and offshoots, but they’re the main game. They publish that indispensible book, The Canberra Gardener, that guides people around the unique challenges of gardening in Canberra, and are very involved in the various flower and veggie shows through the year, and of course the Canberra Show.

The Open Gardens scheme might be useful as a source of contacts, too.
