The ACT Government is eyeing a new site for green waste in Belconnen and has assured residents that they will be able to use the current Parkwood Road facility in Holt until the new one is ready.
Last year the government tried to close the current facility but a backlash from residents, including a petition backed by Liberal Peter Cain, forced a rethink, granting a temporary extension while a longer-term solution was found for large-scale composting and green waste management.
Mr Cain said at the time it was a Band-Aid solution with no time frame.
Now Transport Canberra and City Services say a suitable site has been identified on nearby Stockdill Drive in West Belconnen.
“This site offers the ability to establish a long-term solution for processing green waste and could also accommodate the co-location of a landscaping supply business,” it has told residents in a letter this week.
“The proposed site is just over three kilometres from the existing facility and will offer great access to the residents of Belconnen and North Canberra.”

An ACT Government spokesperson said the site met strict environmental and residential requirements and would ensure the proposed future facility was more than one kilometre from any homes.
“The proposed location is close to existing facilities and will offer good access for residents in Belconnen and North Canberra,” the spokesperson said.
Canberra Sand and Gravel’s (CSG) current green waste facility is being relocated so that the West Belconnen Resource Management Centre can be remediated ahead of more residential development in the growing Ginninderry Joint Venture region.
Mr Cain said it was good news for residents in his growing Ginninderra electorate.
“I’m grateful to the 2128 Canberrans who signed my e-petition,” he said.
If the current site had closed, residents would have had an hour and a half round trip from Belconnen to the Mugga Lane facility.
Community feedback on the proposed new site is being sought ahead of a development application being lodged in late February or early March.
