Help with bugs in our bathrooms please!

Every year around this time tiny black bugs with yellow spots on their backs take up residence in our bathrooms (but no other rooms in the house). They are about half the size of normal lady bird beetles. We will often suck them up with a vacuum cleaner in the evening, only to find a new lot in the bathrooms in the morning!

They don’t seem to be doing anything bad, we just find the infestation in our sinks, bath and showers, annoying.

Does anyone else have this problem? (We live in Palmerston.) Any ideas what these bugs are? And, how do we get rid of them??

I’m looking forward to finding out what they are!

Nanzan, You can also put some in a bottle and take to Phil – he is in Yarralumla, call him for his address.

Thanks again for that! (We’ve started to notice them in other rooms too now – so we should do something about them.)

hmm i used to have a problem with tiny flying bugs that were small enough to get through the fly screen and were attracted to the lights…i found the only way of curbing them was to liberally spray mortein 6 month outdoor protection (or something similar…this one is what i have been using lately) on all window frames and doors…has been working to date!

Thanks Floydwafer…if I can manage to capture a photo of the beetles, given how small they are, and how old our camera is, I will follow your advice.

Is it on this list?

http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_ladybirds/LadybirdFieldGuide.html

Thanks Time_killer. I checked that list myself as well…and no, my beetle doesn’t appear there. The Fungus-eating ladybird beetle comes closest, but doesn’t seem to be the one. That list shows ladybird beetles from the Brisbane area…perhaps I need one that shows ones from the Canberra area.

I dont think they’d be baby ladybird beetles, the ‘babies'(larvae) dont look like little beetles they are are soft and spikey believe it or not!

are they bugs or beetles? beetles have a hard shell and the wing covers are split straight down the middle of the back a (like a lady bird beetle). The wings on bugs cross over on the back (like on a ‘stink bug’)

Fiddlesticks, it’s hard to say, as they are so small, but I just tried to have a look at a couple then using a magnifying glass, and I would say they are beetles and not bugs…there seemed to be a line down the middle of their backs. Their size is more like a tick, rather than a ladybird beetle.

We’ve also never seen these beetles fly…they only seem to sit and walk (and perhaps swim/float…see comment above!).

If they look like lady bugs then they may well baby lady bugs (cute). I think lady bugs start life yellow with black spots and turn red at maturity……. Not 100% sure though.

inlymbo…you might be right…perhaps they are juvenile lady bird beetles; but what are they doing in our bathrooms…shouldn’t they be outside in the garden (where we haven’t seen any, by the way)?

Thank you trickyxr…nice photo…but these bugs (in our house) have very defined yellow spots on their black backs…so like lady bird beetles, but yellow spots instead of red, and about 1/2 or 1/3 the size of a lady bird beetle.

Interestingly, flushing them down the plug holes seems to have no effect on them at all…they reappear within minutes!

Are they light yellow maybe even baby shit brown? do they have little folded wings coming out at their bums? Could be carpet Beetle
