Cost of living exploding?

This is a sh*t load of money to spend on a building. And we are all paying.

As for the pleasure dome/death star, the ACT government has botched the sums as they didn’t allow for depreciation. Office buildings in this town have a useful life of 15-20 years – once the loan is paid off we will be the proud owners of a worthless building.

There are bad governments all over the world. I’d say this is reflective of what those governments can get away with given the societies they govern, and the underlying nature of the humans holding the power.

Canberra is the 15th most expensive in the world to live in.

How much more expensive can a glorified country town get?

I think (correct me if I’m wrong) because it’s infrastructure that has a large initial outlay, but offsets against future costs. It was recommended by the Hawke review of the ACT public service as part of a way to make the ACT public service more efficient and accountable.

Clearly someone must have run the numbers, but I’d have thought the interest cost of the money to build would be a large ongoing cost until the loan was eventually paid back. The opportunity cost would be huge, even though down the track (probably in 20-30 years) the ACT govt would own a sizable asset.

Not really, some people take drastic measures when the cost of living becomes to high, thus resorting to ‘undesirable’ status. That bum on the street may have once been a middle income earning home owner forced out of his/her house due to increasing pressures on finances, now they have to beg for food to feed their children.
Plus the price of housing is continuously going up but you don’t see all the government housing on Northbourne being pulled down.
And it’s not just ACT, NSW cost of living isn’t improving either.

I think that’s what the Costello Review was meant to do – shared services, centralise departments to be closer to Civic, and much more – and look where that got us.
