Man stabbed, woman punched and officers assaulted during two incidents, police allege

A court has remanded a 29-year-old in custody over two violent incidents in which he is accused of stabbing a man, punching a woman and assaulting two police officers.

Martin Ashly Chatfield appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday (6 July) where his lawyer, Legal Aid’s Georgia Le Couteur, said he would not apply for bail.

He was charged with two counts each of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm and assault, as well as single counts each of burglary and possessing a knife without a reasonable excuse.

Magistrate Robert Cook remanded Mr Chatfield in custody to 28 July for pleas to be entered.

Earlier, ACT Policing alleged he had forced his way into a woman’s home about 1.30 am on Monday (3 July).

It is alleged he used a knife to stab a man inside the home and punched the woman in the face before fleeing.

Paramedics arrived and treated the pair before taking the man to hospital for further treatment.

Police claimed they found Mr Chatfield at a service station about 2.30 am on Thursday. It is alleged that when they tried to arrest him, he assaulted one officer and fled on foot.

It is also alleged that a second officer gave chase and arrested him, but he claims Mr Chatfield also assaulted him during the arrest.
