A-League Grand Final Rematch SATURDAY 1pm @ Canberra Stadium

That’s right! The A-League is back in town after the success of last year’s match. The Central Coast Mariners are playing the Newcastle Jets in a pre-season game at Canberra Stadium tomorrow (Sat 12th July). These teams played each other in last year’s A-League Grand Final so it should be a very entertaining game. Several former and current Socceroos will be playing (see CT article here). Kick off is at 1pm and tickets are only $12 for adults and $5 for students/kids. All KANGA Cup players and kids under 12 get in for FREE. This is an absolute BARGAIN! Gates open at 12. The forecast for tomorrow is for fine and sunny weather so despite what it’s been like this week it should be a great day for watching football!

By the way, nearly 1000 people have now signed up (in under 2 weeks) to support Canberra’s bid for an A-League team at http://ateam4canberra.wordpress.com. Ivan Slavich, CEO of TransACT is leading the bid, potential investors have already emerged, PriceWaterhouseCoopers has offered their financial services and Canberra legal firm RSK legal are also providing support (see more here). The FFA has extended a deadline so a bid can be submitted this year for the 2009-10 season and former Socceroos Ned Zelic, Fox Sports Football commentator Simon Hill and Capital Football have all endorsed the bid. I was there and it was a top game for a friendly. Very good crowd but many got in to the match late due to the size of the crowd.

Andrew Barr announced the Government’s support for an A-League team. Saw him and Steve Doszpot, Liberal for Brindabella, chatting in the corner so perhaps the bid will attract support from both political parties.

There was definately more like 7,000 people there. There was still around 750 people lined up 10 mintues into the match and the organisers allowed people to pay cash as they walked in without a ticket being issued.

I didn’t get to go this time, I had my own football match to attend. Went with the family last year and ‘officially’ it was a small crowd as well. However we found that the security people only scanned one ticket per group. So we had a group of six and the guy only scanned one ticket and let the rest of us in. So officially only one ticket got counted. I wonder if that’s what happened this time.

The Mariners won 3-0. It was a very entertaining game – the Mariners scored in the 3rd and 4th minutes, there was a send off, some nice saves from the goal keepers and the odd shot or header hit the woodwork. There is a story in the CT here.

Nearly 5,000 people turned out. I not sure if the attendance figure included all the kids who were there and got in for free. The whole Eastern stand was full and I think there was more like 7,000 there.
