I cant rave enough about kegs. There’s nothing like ditching 50 odd stubbies for a single tank of beer, and I reckon just by switching over you gain something like 40% in quality just cause of the oohh factor alone.

Well that and walking in your front door on a friday night in the full knowledge that you can not humanly drink all the beer in your house in one sitting (believe me, I’ve tried).

After years of experience, we would have to back the use of Ubrewit as well. Great staff, wonderful range of recipes and the best beer I’ve ever had. Free tastings while your you do your brew as well. Can’t rate the place highly enough.

Mediocre beer is better off in bottles. Easier to use in cooking.

You can get cheap Cooper’s starter kits at Big W, but still worth going to BYOAH for advice and ongoing supplies. They also have occasional get-togethers with tips on a particular aspect of brewing your own.

Compared to having 30 painstakingly bottled bottles of crap beer?

Bottling into 750ml PET bottles is not too bad (I do both, bottle into glass and PET, as well as keg) and the startup cost for 30 PET bottles is about $25 ($12.50 x 2 from Big W for Coopers PET bottles). The startup cost for an equivalent keg setup would be at least a couple of hundred dollars for a bare bones setup, plus a lot of time setting up a keg fridge etc.

Have you thought about getting a bunch of friends together and going to ubrewit? I’m not sure if you still consider it the sort of ‘home-brew’ that you are after, but you don’t have to worry about heaps of the start-up costs and you can Can your brews which I think is a lot better then re-using dirty bottles.

Doing bottles is fine so long as you have yourself a good bottle capper. I do stubbies over longnecks – about 55 per brew. Takes a bit more time but more party friendly when turning up at peoples houses. Then again you would be the envy of the party turning up with a keg. Col at Kambah is very good. He was able to tell me over the phone why a batch of bottles was exploding under the house – I didnt boil the honey!
