Gungahlin police station to go 24/7

The Gungahlin police station is to go over to around-the-clock operations.

GCC talked with Police Minister Simon Corbell about exactly this at the Meet the Ministers meeting on Monday 5 August. His response was that he has additional staff coming online soon, so yes, and it would be a matter of timing.

Today he is announcing that the station will receive 24 additional officers and two additional cars, allowing for an expansion to a six-team roster system.

Start date is down for January. Would be better if we could bring this forward to before the busy Christmas period though.

Tick another item off our pre-election campaign list…

UPDATED: Simon Corbell’s media release confirming this is now online.

Hardly the police’s fault that the government disguises adding more police to the beat when they’re really only topping up the numbers of those leaving. Again all this is doing is taking 24 officers from the already understaffed stations and moving them to Gungahlin. Like a magic act really, all an illusion to try and win back a few votes.

When I spoke to Simon on Monday, he indicated that there are 122 new officers coming on line.
Are you implying that the loss and attrition is greater than the number of incoming officers?

Members get promoted to different areas within ACT Policing (traffic, TIG etc), some transfer from ACT to Federal operations, get posted overseas etc etc.

I will go on the record here. I bet the first Sod for the swimming pool will be turned in the 2012 Pork-barreling period.

And then you can sit back after four years of doing nothing about it and be proved exactly right. Yay, you.

You’ve just got yourself a volunteer, Gungahlin Al. I’ll send you an email via the GCC website.

When I was living in Gnunnawal a few years back a bunch of asshales folloed me and my brother home from the platapus shops.

We tried to do the right thing and dial 000 but it still took the cops over an hour to get there, When they arrived they told us that they couldn’t do anything because THEY DIDN’T CATCH THEM IN THE ACT, So really When U think about more cops don’t think about how many cops there are, think about how bad there response time still will be and how much fun u can have untill they arive…..

AMEN!!!!!!!

Sorry you took it that way Wombat.

Sure it is wise to remain cynical. But it is also fair to take advantage of what comes your way, and right now we are endeavouring to take advantage of the fact that the election being just 10 weeks away is sharpening some perceptions around the traps.

Yes – keeping them to promises will be the next challenge. And our newsletter will be a key tool in pursuing that goal. We believe that both candidates and incumbents are aware just how valuable a tool it is to get a complete unadulterated story out to our community if needed.

And all the candidates who come to our meet the candidates night will be on camera – for referral in case of need.

Wombat: like to think that having a decent 16 or 20 page newsletter that goes out to 14,800 houses and businesses (the latest issue of which is being delivered this week and you can view on our new website here) helps a bit to get our concerns across. Perhaps one helps influence the other? .

OMG, i forgot that when the government goes into its Election (Pork-barreling) mode, how important you are to this process.

Please Mr President of Gungahlin, forgive me my trespass.

I will go on the record here. I bet the first Sod for the swimming pool will be turned in the 2012 Pork-barreling period.

Now THAT would beat the Prime Possum!
I’m picturing a statue of the bunyip biting a chunk out of the Telstra Tower, placed outside the new Gungahlin library! A tribute if you like to the book’s role in teaching kids to read.

I’m tracking with you, dude!

JB: plenty more on our list but more suggestions from the community cheerfully accepted. No spaceport, but we have floated a solar farm community cooperative .

OMG… are you the president Gungahlin Al?

Yeah that seems like a good idea. A 24hr cop shop where nothing ever happens…

There actually has been a rise in after hours assaults in the Town Centre precinct – this hasn’t been reported widely (if at all) in the media.

Also bear in mind that Gungahlin now has a population base equivalent to that of Queanbeyan, so 24/7 coverage is not unreasonable.

I reckon we should get a statue of that iconic Canberra legend Alexander Bunyip, The Monster That Ate Canberra.

Note to self: remember to check speedo when driving past police station

Oh wow, GDE being fixed, a pool/health club and a police station that operates 24/7. A syndic might think the governments poling is showing that they are weak in Gungahlin.

Must be a lot of swinging voters in Gungahlin!

Contrast is going to like this idea!!!

LOL you beat me to it loqua!!! :-p

Loquaciousness1:14 pm 05 Aug 08

At least it’ll make it easier for those unfortunates who have been the victim of a car-crash/high speed pursuit to report the incident …

Mike Crowther1:06 pm 05 Aug 08

On this governments record I wouldn’t go crossing anything of the list until the uniforms are actually working out of the building 24/7.

I’m not cynical, I’ve just heard this song before.

Sounds like you need to get cracking and get some more items on your list.

How about a space-port?
