Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has appointed Stephanie Crowe as the new Head of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC).
The ACSC is the Australian Government’s technical authority on cyber security.
It provides an avenue for organisations large and small to partner with the government and adopt a security framework to protect their information technology and operational technology systems, applications, and data from cyber threats.
It is the successor to the Cyber Security Operations Centre and is part of the ASD.
The ACSC is overseen by the Cyber Security Operations Board and falls within Mr Marles’ portfolio and responsibility as Defence Minister.
In announcing the new appointment, the minister noted Ms Crowe has an extensive background in cyber security, having worked across government and industry to respond to nationally significant cyber events and strengthen Australia’s cyber defences.
Over her 15-year career at ASD, Ms Crowe has held a number of key roles in signals intelligence and cyber security, including leading ASD’s technical advice and assistance programs for industry and building ASD’s cyber threat intelligence capabilities.
“I am pleased to see Ms Crowe appointed to this important position,” Mr Marles said.
“Her experience and expertise across the cyber domain sees her well placed to lead the Australian Cyber Security Centre, at a time where we see Australian networks increasingly targeted by malicious cyber actors.
“Her appointment demonstrates the Albanese Government’s enduring commitment to bolstering the nation’s cyber security efforts as the ASD continues to defend against global threats.”
The announcement follows the recent appointment of Abigail Bradshaw as Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate.
Ms Bradshaw took up her role in September last year, after serving as Deputy Director-General of ASD and Head of ASD’s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) since March 2020.
She welcomed Ms Crowe’s promotion, which was announced on Thursday (9 January).
“Stephanie has the proven experience in intelligence and cyber operations and has established close relationships with international and industry leaders in cyber security, vital to combatting the dynamic and challenging cyber threat environment,” Ms Bradshaw said.
“Stephanie acutely understands the cyber threats and challenges facing all Australians against a backdrop of rapid advancements in critical and emerging technologies, and how we can better engage them through continued government-industry collaboration.”
The ACSC works with business, government and academic partners, as well as experts in Australia and overseas, to investigate and develop solutions to cyber threats against Australian entities and people.
It issues cyber security alerts and advice on the latest threats and vulnerabilities.
Ms Crowe said in a statement: “I look forward to leading ASD’s team of cyber security experts in strengthening Australia’s cyber resilience.”
