Several students have been injured, one critically, after a tree fell at Government House earlier this week.

A spokesperson from the Office of the Official Secretary to the Governor-General said the branch fell from a tree located in the area outside the gates of Government House.

The students had recently finished a tour of Government House.

“First aid was rendered on site by AFP officers before some students were taken, via ambulance, to The Canberra Hospital,” the spokesperson said.

ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) said a triple zero call was made around 2:40 pm on Wednesday (19 February).

ACT Ambulance was called to Government House in Yarralumla following reports of a fallen tree.

One person was taken to hospital in a critical condition, the ESA spokesperson said, while three other people received minor injuries.

It is understood trees on the grounds of Government House are regularly inspected and that the trees had been judged as being safe within the last six months.

The spokesperson from Government House said their best wishes were with the schoolchildren.

“The Governor-General and everyone at the Office were very concerned about the wellbeing of the injured student, remain in contact with the school, and send their best wishes for a full recovery.”

Government House is the official residence of the Governor-General and is visited by more than 25,000 schoolchildren each year.
