A 48-year-old man was charged with the rape of an intellectually disabled woman and will face the Magistrates Court in about a week, News.com.au is reporting.
Since it’s sub judice, the report is couched in all kinds of “alleged”s and “police say”s, but the gist of the story is this guy alledgedly picked up the 41-year-old woman at a community club and took her away and raped her in a South Canberra park and then again in an apartment somewhere.
The site’s reporting she then returned (or was returned) to the Southern Cross Club (it’s not clear if this is the club previously referred to).
ACT police are calling for anyone who may have seen the woman and a man wearing blue jeans and a dark blue jacket walking through parkland at Woden on Friday afternoon.
“Investigators are keen to speak with a woman at the Southern Cross Club who may have witnessed the victim leaving the premises around 2.30pm (AEST) on August 5,” ACT Policing said in a statement.
I personally think this is a fairly nasty story all round. The woman may or may not have known what was going to happen and she may or may not have understood the implications. However, someone’s complained of rape, so obviously once she was put in the situation she didn’t want to be there.
Also, did the offender know she was disabled? If so, then that’s even worse in my view.
