Well I wouldn’t be shooting at ISO100 for a start at night as you’re doing dynamic range no favours. I probably wouldn’t shoot f/16 either as you loose sharpness on a lot of cheaper lenses stopping down that far. Certainly beyond f/16 you do even on higher end ones.

The very high ISO capabilities of new DSLRs plus the IS lenses do make fantastic handheld shots possible in conditions that never were feasible just a few years ago. So if you don’t even have one of those pocket tripods, then you’ll still be able to take good shots. But a tripod opens up many more possibilities.

There will be photographers of all standards there, and the event will span over sunset. If you want to learn new ways of taking photos from the really good people there, then I would recommend bringing a tripod of some sort along. If you don’t have a carrybag for it, just tie a strap to the top and bottom so you can sling it on your back.

The point of these events is to broaden our skills by learning off the pros who give up their time to come along. So let’s make the best of that opportunity?

Awww- some HDR shots from certain cameras look awesome, and you’d need a tripod for them.

Just saying the wording is a bit silly. Should make it accessible and fun, not make it sound like you need to lug kilos of equipment. Tripod would allow for some more creative options like long exposures and multi-exposures, but it isn’t essential. Even an iPhone handheld can do wonderful things.

I see your point, but opening with the hyperbolic “only hopeless photographers need tripods” line isn’t going to win you much support. A tripod may not be absolutely necessarily, but it sure makes things easier and will usually get you a better result.
