Get a new bike from $50 per week

A good mechanic in Canberra

By Maelinar 11 December 2007 37

Recently I have had 2 vehicles serviced at Ultratune in Belconnen. We have found the team at Ultratune to do a great job, indeed as it turned out they forked out nearly the entire amount of the service again, doing additional work on Mrs Mælinar’s vehicle as it had not been quoted to her in the agreement (something in the realms of $390 for a new alternator).

I found the service to be of exceptional quality, and before you get the car back, he estimates what could be coming up in the next few thousand kilometers – giving you a good idea of what is going on in your vehicle that you don’t necessarily see via everyday driving.

If you are in the market for a decent mechanic in Canberra, I recommend giving Ultratune a shot, the price isn’t painless but its market competitive.

[Ed – Where else is good around town?]

Don’t go to Tuggeranong Car Care, they are a crooked business ready to charge you for what you don’t need.

My experiences with them have been very good. But in saying that, 99% of the time I already know exactly what work my vehicles need, and what the parts/labour costs should be.

I’ve been using Repco City Care Care in Braddon for years and I’ve always been very happy with them. They’re not cheap (who is?), but they’re damn good. They fix helicopters too, so that probably says something about the quality of the mechanics.

I have been using DMB Automotive in Dickson for some years now and can’t find a reason to complain.

Chris hedges mechanical in fyshwick

Hands down the best mechanic in Canberra, looks after you and shows you exactly the problem, lets you know the problem before it is fixed and associated costs for repair.

I’ll be in Belconnen during lunch time so will try to see if I can squeeze some time to go to Mechanical care, Belconnen.

Gordon, Mechanical Care, Belconnen. Yes I’m plugging a mate, but I won’t unless they’re worthy. He’s an awfully busy bloke these days, I guess that says a lot.

+ 1 Total Traction Services

National Capital Motors Belconnen – well they found a problem with system my car didn’t have, when I questioned the service manager on it he argued and pretty much called me an idiot and/or a liar, and I must of added the system myself and it was going to cost me hundreds to fix it.

As it was a fairly new car (first proper service) I called the sales manager and told him he must of “ripped me off and sold me a second hand car with after market parts, and I would be there in half an hour to get a full refund otherwise I would go them for fraud”

Of course I knew they hadn’t done that and the service guy was a fool. Surprise, surprise when I turned up the sales manager came out to see me, any mention of me paying for anything disappeared , many apologies came flying my way, it turned because it was a new model it just had the wiring harness for the optional system, and the staff there didn’t know about it yet.

If Darren is no longer associated with A & D, I would suggest you certainly give them a go.

One of my friends told me that A&D Motors in Canberra Ave Fyshwick has been sold to an Asian man.

I’m not sure I’ll go there now as it was Darren who got recommended here.

My car is due for 200K service.

This thread is very old and probably lot has been changed since then. So what are current recommendations for good and honest mechanic.

Thanks

I’ve always been concerned that non-factory-trained technicians would not be able to do as good a job on a late-model vehicle. Anyone care to allay this concern?

I always thought that too until I worked at a dealer and found out that 95% of the “mechanics” there are only trade assistants or apprentices and wouldn’t know a spark plug from a sump plug. And the dealer has a very high hourly $ rate, considerably more than other non-dealer workshops (such as ones mentioned above).

that’s why when you take your car to Nissan it comes back with valve clearances you can run a paddle pop stick thru, a busted top radiator outlet with a half assed repair to try hide it broke in the first place and told your cars stuffed and needs 16K in engine repairs

That’s because their mechanics are factory trained in the land of the rising sun and thus have to squint when using the paddle pop sticks. Also the numbers wear off the sticks making them hard to read and in the end they all look the same.
There is the added bonus of getting a car post repair, that sounds like a diesel without the pricy upfront costs associated with purchasing a real diesel.
Regarding “half assed” repairs, I won’t comment except to say I know nothing about asses, mules, hinnys or jennys….

Just make sure you stay away from Pedders belconnen.

I went in to Pedders in Belco to inquire about getting my car serviced, and saw one of the mechanics playing with a metal grinder on a car and laughing with his mates at all the sparks that were flying off it. Hmm.

On the same street corner in Belconnen is the Car Doctor, which is supposedly very good (http://www.womo.com.au/reviews/Car-Doctor-Belconnen/#.USgLdx0wp6k).
