A queue! A real queue for an Apple release!

Now books is an interesting feature of the iPad. For students, it’s unfortunately useless because ebooks have yet to implement a standardised page numbering system because of their variable sized text. (Amazon was talking about introducing such a thing, not sure what happened with it though).

And for general users, the issue is that iPads like all tablets use transmissive displays, not reflective displays, which can cause more eye strain, particularly in low light environments (because of the difference between ambient light and the backlight).

Magazines are an attractive use, and using an iPad as a photo editing accessory (a bit like Wacom’s Cintiq series tablets that I’ve long drooled over) is also a nice prospect, but for both I’d prefer to see a couple of extra inches on the screen.

Whether you are an apple fan or not, they do make quality products and they sell them well. I bet nearly every other company in the world wishes they had the same success of late.

Tablets and PDA’s were around long before Apple created the iPad. Now everyone makes tablets, just that Apple marketed it to the masses.

I went to Woden to get a new iPad (significant upgrade of my iPad 2 which they still sell!)

Big W and JB hifi haven’t got them yet. I think DJ’s had them was what the JB guy said, but i can wait. If I can get it from Big W i’ll get extra frequent flyer points too and save money!

But yeah my iPad doesn’t replace my laptop thats for sure. Although I do enjoy the convenience of the iPad to consume books, news etc etc.

But I agree – trying to make an ipad fit around your work needs is the wrong way to go.

Are you so pov that you can’t just buy one with spare cash?

They’re not expensive. That’s “cash in the wallet” territory.

I don’t understand the iPad, and I’m what you might call a fanboy. Or more to the point, I don’t understand how other people buy and use the iPad.

It’s a consumption device by itself, fine. For that purpose it works, it’s good, no problem.

But then you see a lot of people, particularly on campus, add cases, keyboards, stands, taking the whole price up to a grand easily for a 32GB iPad. And you wonder, why didn’t you just buy a Macbook air in the first place which starts at a grand. Bigger screen, all day battery, runs a full OS, has double the storage and has the keyboard with backlight already.

Even having done Apple’s training, which includes a psychological component about how to sell their products, I still can’t work out the iPad’s attraction.

I’m an Apple user. OK: Apple fan.

But the iPad Air is $30–40 lower than RRP at Big W stores.

So, if there’r 10 people in that line buying iPads, that’s $300+ Apple profit right there.

I think Apple products are alright. But the company (apparently) pays disproportionately low taxes in Australia. Maybe I’m just not in the mood to be a cheerleader, having just done my tax return, and paying my share.

If you ever had any doubt about the insidious power of advertising, look no further.

Decided to update my somewhat battered and bent iPad2. Walked into the Apple store around 11am, got exactly what I wanted and was out 5 minutes later. Dunno why you’d bother queuing at 8am.

Still wouldn’t mind some of the drugs they give the staff there, no one can work retail and be that happy naturally.

Here’s a nickel kid. Get yourself a better computer.

Apple have some very smart and effective marketing. And I suspect they don’t give a s*** about a few people bleating from the sidelines.

Back in my day you had to go to Fyshwick to get your iThingy!

Also, back in the good old days, there were no queues because nobody used Apple computers so it was quite easy to get your hands on whatever was new at the time!

This is as close to “community” that Generation Xbox gets.

My iPad 1 still works fine… Although apple no longer seem to update the OS. What number is the new one up too?

I worked at JB HIFI during an iThingy launch and it was chaos. They flew off shelves. Then there was problems with getting more in, huge demand, distribution issues, trucks not able to make all the stops they needed to.

Anarchy.

Also lining up for nerdy things like this tends to be really fun. There’s a bit of a sense of community going, a lot of excitement in the air. I’ve never queued for an Apple product but I always line up for the next big console release.

Really? Sold out by 10? I stand corrected. I like gadgets as much as anyone (I’m typing this on an ipad). I avoid queues at all costs though. I don’t care how cool the product is!
