After suggestions this morning that the ACT Greens may not give their approval to the new bill for same-sex civil unions, the Greens’ Shane Rattenbury has commented on their position.
The differences between partnership legislation and union legislation are technical, but the change nevertheless would be a step forward towards equality.
I was surprised to hear the announcement from the Government as I know members of the community who would prefer that the ACT leave debate on civil unions until after Federal Parliament has voted on equal marriage legislation. The concern is that some Federal politicians would point to improved ACT civil unions laws as a reason why they don’t need to support changes to Federal laws.
ACT Greens will announce a decision on the bill after consulting with interested members of the community.
Any predictions on which way this might go?
