ACT street lights on in the middle of the day

Street light

The leading concern for most people who are on a tight budget is how to save money and conserve energy. However it seems that ACT Government is not sharing this idea, as there are street lights being left on in the day, and it is happening on a regular basis.

Antill Street in Dickson and along Northbourne Avenue are the areas where I have noticed it is happening, there seems to be a total disregard for the conservation of power and energy.

Canberra is known for participating in earth hour and the ACT Government is committed to this issue of “conservation of energy”, however it does not seem to be evident with this latest display of wastage of power and not to mention money.

There seems to be no concern as it has been mentioned to Canberra Connect who said they would address the issue, however two days later I saw the lights on again, this time I was travelling past Mitchell towards Gungahlin when I noticed that the street lights were on again, in the middle of the day.

Canberra needs to address the issue of energy conservation and start turning off the street lights in the middle of the day, it is just being realistic and reasonable about energy conservation. The ACT Government needs to get on board the conservation train and hurry up and turn the lights off in the day. Take a look around Canberra next time and notice if there are any street lights on in the day in that area, because if the answer is yes, well it should not be, as it’s a waste of energy and money.

Do you have photos of street lights lit during the day? Please share with us via our Facebook page so that we can pass them on to the ACT Government. The above is a file image from iStock.

Its greener because all our power comes from solar. They’ll have lights on during the day while using green solar energy and turn them off at night when we go back to use base load coal. This saves a fair bit of money and is better for the environment. (One of the lights has a sensor on it. If a bird poops on it the lights turn on)

hahaha…..very good. A return to some humor on RiotAct !!! Great to see.

The street lights are all on sensors.

As pointed out above they get turned on manually for checking.

So if there is no obvious signs of workers then here is a novel thought. Rather than take pics and send to some fax rage Facebook site, how about reporting it to Canberra connect instead. (Not sure if fixmystreet still exists).

Street lights are sometimes left on during the day to facilitate checking and replacement of bulbs. With the string of lights on, you look for the bulbs that are off. This minimises risks of mistakenly replacing a functioning bulb while leaving a dead one in place.

I thought the street lights are on sensors. So if the sensors sense that it’s dark enough during the day they turn on.
Also I thought they were moving to the low energy lights a few years ago.
I may be wrong though.
