ACT Tourism’s big chance

By johnboy - 15 December 2005 7

OK so the ashes tour next year is shaping up as the biggest sporting event in Australia since the Sydney Olympics.

We have one event of any interest to the touring throng, the PM’s XI.

Historically the Barmy Army have shunned the fixture. How does Canberra get a piece of the pie?

I’d like to suggest inviting the Barmy Army XI to play the ACT the day before the PM’s XI. Does anyone have any other bright ideas?

Free beer and it’s application should be seriously considered.

What’s Your opinion?

Was this post written before the date was announced? It seems to me there’ll be no Barmy Army here at all now we’re the opening fixture on the tour. Most of the Poms go straight to Brisbane for the first test and drink their way round the country from there.

Bigger than the opening of the GDE in 2025?

Canberrans could offer them a free billet for the night; and learn from their charm, good manners and tasteful language.

I’m confident they’d be great fun and well behaved in our houses.

The problem is that ACT Tourism doesn’t see the point of any tourism if it doesn’t put bookings into hotels.

but a free bed and a feed would get them coming here in droves.

As for “biggest event” in terms of visitors it’s shaping to be bigger than the RWC.

They will come, don’t worry about it. 30,000 of them.

Oh next summer is going to be fun!

But I wish we could get some real first class matches here.

“Historically the Barmy Army have shunned the fixture.”
-Probably because the expense of coming here for a relatively minor fixture doesn’t appeal. Remedy: Canberrans could offer them a free billet for the night; and learn from their charm, good manners and tasteful language.

Uh huh. Forgotten about the rugby world cup? Given the poms current form against the pakis its guaranteed to be a yawn fest.

I’ll play, if that’s any help.
