ACTEWAGL Floating Billing System

I just had an interesting telephone conversation with an ACTEWAGL representative regarding their ‘cancellation’ fees in relation to the services that they provide.

The essence of the conversation went along these lines:

Conversation 1
ACTEW: You owe us $200 for cancelling your 56k dialup internet account
Maelinar: I got told that there would be no fee by (NAME), and I have previously been quoted a different figure so I don’t think that is correct
ACTEW: OK, I’ll check with (NAME)

Conversation 2
ACTEW: (NAME) doesn’t work here, are you sure that was his name
Maelinar: (after looking at notes) Yes
ACTEW: I have called Transact and they say you still have an account with them, for long distance calls
Maelinar: Yes I do
ACTEW: So you have only changed your contract, that means that you no longer qualify for the 10% discount and will be downgraded to the 5% discount, and there will be no fee for disconnecting the internet service

The funny thing is, I had previously been quoted $150 to disconnect out of contract, but I then called my wife who had been called by ACTEW before me, she was told it was a blanket $50 per service.

So we’ve gone through $0 to $50 to $150 to $200 disconnection fees in under 20mins..

I have checked the website and couldn’t find anything regarding disconnect fees there, any Rioters out there had experiences with the ‘floating’ billing system ?
