It’s not the first gay publication in Canberra. During the 1990s there was a local gay rag called Panda (Poofs and Dykes ACT). It lasted around two years before folding.

There was also Quirk when I first came to Canberra in 2000 – not sure how long it had been running for but it folded as well shortly after I arrived.

Oh god, just when I thought I had a handle on it (OOoh err missuus!)

queer without being gay, and gay without being queer

That’s one can of worms I’m not touching with a bargepole in a month of sundays.

Almost…

One can (as far as I can tell) be queer without being gay, and gay without being queer.

It’s all about self-identification which is not something wise men meddle with.

Thanks Johnboy.

So, if I read you rightly, someone who is “queer” is overtly homosexual and into the scene, while a “gay” person may be homosexual, not be so inclined to broadcast it, and does not of necessity involve themselves in the culture.

Yup, I can live with that. You learn something new every day!

IIRC, queer is a lifestyle, while gay is a sexuallity.

So then, the difference between “gay” and “queer” these days is?

Someone must be able to enlighten me.

I hope Andrew Barr is NOT taking a public roll, that’s an image I can do without thanks very much PB!

Oh my giddy aunt, what would Bob Todd have said?

LOL!! Thanks for pointing out that gem of a faux pas.

And no, it’s not a Freudian…

There’s also Twenty600, which has been going for a year. (They actually have some articles that are interesting if you’re not gay as well!)

So it’s third at best…

Excuse my ignorance, those of a alternative sexuality, but what is the difference between “gay” and “queer”, and which is PC these days?

Oh, and Mr Barr has my respect for taking a public roll in supporting those of a similar sexuality to him. A rare thing (courage of conviction,) in a polly.
