Andrew Leigh’s maiden speech

By caf - 19 October 2010 12

For those of us residing north of the Molonglo, our new Federal representative Andrew Leigh made his maiden speech to Parliament on Monday. Pollytics has the full transcript – here’s how it starts off:

It is hard to imagine a greater honour than to represent your friends and neighbours in our national parliament. Each of us brings to this place the hopes and dreams of the people who chose us. I am keenly aware both of the incredible opportunity the people of Fraser have bestowed on me, and the very great responsibility to them which that opportunity entails.

Let me begin, then, by telling you about my electorate of Fraser, and the city of Canberra in which it lies.

Fraser rests on the right bank of the Molonglo River, stretching north from the office blocks of Civic to the young suburbs of Bonner and Forde on the ACT’s northernmost tip. Because the leaders of the time decided that a capital city must have its own port, the electorate of Fraser also includes the Jervis Bay Territory, home to a diverse community, and a school where kangaroos graze on an oval overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

What’s Your opinion?

You watch Gai and Andrew focus on climbing the ALP greasy pole and ignore the issues affecting the people in their safe Labor seats.

To be fair, Bob always replied to our (very few) letters. It’s just that he would never actually say anything of substance. So we gave up.

As long we keep this a safe seat, then we’ll keep getting these where’s-wally types for politicians.

Come to think of it, Bob still owes me a couple of replies to letters.

Guess I’m not going to get them now hey?

I wish he would tell his electorate about him. As far as I am concerned he is an unknown.

Have you tried contacting him yourself? Google is your friend: http://www.andrewleigh.com/

There is even a bio and a blog (not that I’ve read either)

FWIW, even I know that Andrew Leigh has been around the place for ages, particularly the ANU. Before entering Parliament he was a widely published economist and commentator (including mainstream media).

What else is he supposed to do exactly?

Pay you a personal audience? Ask to be your Facebook friend?

I went to see his predecessor twice – a complete waste of time. And he was the bloke Andrew praised!! I have also written to ministers in his party but never get a response apart from some grandmother statement for one of their ‘advisors’. For the record, Andrew didn’t even have to get out of bed to be elected in Fraser. What has he done or going to do for the local community? And I should not have to google him or mix with the academics at the ANU to get that sort of information – he should be on the front foot and putting it out there.

With a super safe seat I expect he will work as hard and achieve as much as the Member for Hume (Alby Schultz).

You can ask to be one of his Facebook friends. He seems to be relaxed about who he accepts as Facebook friends. He accepted me.

He doesn’t have to do anything does he?!!!
All the while Fraser is a “safe” Labor seat (WHY??), he can tell us all to go kiss a duck and he’ll still get voted in again.
Just another ALP waste of space!

He may be unknown to many but at least he has been fairly upfront about what he does, being an academic at ANU and economist specifically.
A better effort than Gai Brodtman who was deliberately evasive about her work, stating only that she “ran her own business” and was a “staffer” for past MPs.
Not surprising she kept her business as a communications consultant a secret though given she herself is such a terrible communicator. Her maiden speech was surprisingly poor, disjointed and she spoke with no rhythm, sort of like a primary school presentation.

I heard a bit of it on the radio (although wasn’t paying much attention) – it was all rather “we are the world, we are the future, we are the ones to make a brighter place blah de blah”

A little bit flowery for a mere parliamentarian, but I like his sentiment about Fraser…
