Anyone living in Evatt? Is it a safe suburb?

Having lived there for 11 years I would have to say that it is a great suburb. Quiet, friendly, good location, good ammentities around it and close to Belconnen , the city and access to the Parkway/GDE is you need to go south (I do for work). All in all a great suburb.

+1 only been there for 1.5 years. safer than Florey where i lived previously for 2 years.

It’s a very high standard dumpy area, despite it’s looks.

A grand total of 9 houses (even though there is a number 10 and no 9?) in my cul-de-sac, were all govvy builds but 6 have been private for a zillion years. 3 of those 6 people are the original renter/owners and 3 are high turnover. 3 have remained govvies and I’ve been there over 16 years and the other two have had higher turnover (3 & 5 families) in that time. So some people want to stay seemingly forever and others just can’t stay. Seems about half. So it’s not for everyone. Although, before they get the ‘wanna get away’ bug they seem happy and at least initially love the place.
No hard feelings for the area with the couple of ex-neighbours I still talk to on the odd occasion.

But it has a great safe and friendly feel, police presence is rare (not needed) unless you have an attracting family in your area. We used to have Johnny the drunk who used to be a big pain in the arse sometimes to his neighbours (and some kids) and anywhere he wandered or bus he caught etc, but he’s gone the government finally moved him and Evatt shops side of Evatt cheered. I had some rotten neighbours too but they’re gone. So it’s like most suburbs, great if you don’t land neighbours from Hell and that’s hard when they turn ’em over high.

My kids have always wandered about to shops, parks and friends places and really never had any drama.

Lol at the GM Canola fields at the CSIRO, just funny for me because my long term friend who moved to Townsville was visiting the other week and when she picked me up to go somewhere she asked me if that was canola and I said, I didn’t know but it sure looked like it. She commented how she found it pretty.
My head struggled to come up with anything, I used to find it pretty too and then something I found out made me think twice, but my memory is swiss cheese sometimes.

I wish I lived on the better side of Evatt but as I’m stuck here, I’m still pretty happy.

One story I have from years ago that can show you the level of crime, when my friend lived in the house next to the scout hall and shops and she had had a massive fight with her boyfriend and proceeded to put all his belongings she could muster on the front curb in full view. A really nice pushbike, a telly, video player, tennis racquet, clothes etc, just threw ’em there and she gleefully went to bed (after ringing me excitedly) waiting, well you guessed it, everything, down to the undies was still there in exact order. She was bummed!

My boyfriend and kids leave far too much stuff outside and it’s pretty much always safe. But I make ’em put the good stuff away, my daughter did have her dirtbike stolen, but I suspect it was something to do with her friends, 15-16 yr olds are dodgy at picking friends at the best of times.

Maybe now she’s worried about someone’s grandma … who may or may not be an axe murderer, depending on which side of Evatt she’s moving to …

there are 2 parts to Evatt. Some very nice areas and some dumps. Anything facing the lake should be good. you can easily see for yourself by driving around. Looks like the CSIRO may be growing GM canola in Evatt (all those nice yellow flowers) – should be fine, depending on which way the wind is blowing.

Having lived there for 6 years – depending on which end of Evatt you live – I can recommend Florey shops over Evatt. The IGA is bigger, brighter, friendly owners. Like Evatt, they have a butcher, hairdresser, bakery, chemist (9-9, 7 days), newsagency. They also have a chinese restaurant, Dominoes, a fish’n’chips (you HAVE to go once to check out the lady’s hair that works there!), a bike repair shop and a thai restaurant named ‘Morks’. Nanu nanu.

My brother’s family live in Evatt with their two young kids (7 and 5) and they have only ever had one problem, which was with neighbours who have moved recently. Seems like a great suburb to live. Schools, good shops, ovals and parks and just close enough to the sports club to make it nice and easy to get to when you can’t be bothered cooking!

3″ thick polycarbonate in the windows, twin deadlocks, kevlar fly screens on the doors… a few DIY improvements and any suburb is safe.
