Art that really excites the public

Mario on Gungahlin Drive

A few of you have sent this in but Shane was the first.

Apparently he can be found beside the city bound side of Gungahlin Drive between Palmerston and Mitchell.

They’ve struck again, this time with a Piranha Plant.

Would duck back out and take a photo but am sure someone else will oblige shortly.

God was this really 9 months ago?

I just can’t wait to see what John Stanhope and John McKay will come up with after seeing this low cost installation in their little weeing contest to see who can waste the most of other people’s money in the name of their concepts of art.

I think the distinction between “graffiti” and “street art” is that the latter is sanctioned and legal, whereas the former is not. In this case it is illegal graffiti.

If they’d gone to the trouble of coating the access vent in something non-destructive (to match the Mario cutout) then it would be more acceptable.

Well depending on your definition of art, I think whether legal or not this is street art. If it means less to the general public than a roadsigns (tags and such) then it’s graffiti, however if it can be interpreted by the general public then i think it’s art and since it’s on the street then it’s “street art”. I think legality has little do do with its artistic merit. I’m not really sure ho they have “destroyed” this miscellaneous utilitarian object. And while taste is subjective not everyone likes the legal public art on this same road either.

Thats like heaps better than that mess of steel that is placed at the bridge or the rock on the timber structure. More artistic, much less cost too!! ^_^. Has anyone else noticed the holloween mask (now santa mask) on the log on majura rd?

While I hate graffiti, I love this sort of stuff. A workmate calls it ‘guerrilla art’ and I reckon it is awesome.

Just like the Lake George Zebras, this sort of thing brightens everyone day just a little bit. Lets see mopre of this and less twisted metal piles and stupid wind swinging things (on Adelaide Ave).

Like most art its beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Paper mario > regular mario

I wouldn’t call this graffiti but street art, graffit is when people write pointless, indecipherable words on wall that are not have no meaning to the wider public but only others who write graffit. When it’s an actual image of something that other people can enjoy then I call it street art.

Ceci n’est pas une pipe, anyone?

So where is all the moral outrage about grafitti and vandalism, come on you know who you are. Vent your spleen here.

It is better than the sculture on the same road near the AIS and I bet it didn’t cost us tax payers a cent
