Mt Stromlo - Asbestos Sporting Heaven?

The ABC are reporting here that “wasteland” at the foot of Mount Stromlo is being turned into a sporting facility.

What most people will be unaware of is that the term “wasteland” is more prophetic than it would first seem… There is a lot of loose asbestos waste (especially from the 2003 bushfires that ravaged the houses in the region) that has been dumped and buried in this area.

I remember attending several community meetings in Weston Creek and the authorities were always cagey about admitting that asbestos had been dumped in the area and when they did finally admit there was asbestos material their standard line was that it was buried appropriately…. I still have my doubts as the initial dumping was in one of the creek beds.
