Ashleigh Mannix – Big in Japan?

johnboy 24 July 2009 4

The Auspop blogspot brings word that Canberra’s Ashleigh Mannix has had some sort of hit in Japan with her song “Pieces of You”. Before she heads to Japan to strutt her stuff she’s doing an east coast tour.

If you haven’t heard her lately (she started playing music around town while still in her teens) she’s got tracks up for a listen on her website.

The Canberra date on the tour is 16 August at the Italo-Australian Club. RiotACT will be checking with our Tokyo correspondent and will report back on how the Japan success is going.

Any relation to the Uncanny X-Men frontman?

Been to the Folkus Room at the Italo Australian Club VG? it’s a big, big room.

Probably bigger than the ANU refectory which has hosted no-marks like Nirvana and The Cure.

I’m not saying she can fill the room, I don’t know that.

I have seen her live and yes, she is talented. However she is one of many in the ‘cutesy girl with a guitar’ genre.

She has been the ‘next big thing’ for at least the last 5 years. Based on that she isn’t the next big thing. If she was she wouldn’t be playing the Italo-Australian Club.

That reminds me of a Tom Waits song (it goes a little somethin’ like this):

I got the style but not the grace
I got the clothes but not the face
I got the bread but not the butter
I got the winda but not the shutter

But I’m big in Japan I’m big in Japan
But heh I’m big in Japan

I got the house but not the deed
I got the horn but not the reed
I got the cards but not the luck
I got the wheel but not the truck

But heh I’m big in Japan I’m big in Japan I’m big in Japan
