Ask RiotACT: Colour tattooist recommendations

Hi All,

I have a 20 year old colour tattoo that needs an update – about the size of a small dinner plate. Not a cover up but a ‘refresh’ – lines and colors redone.

Any suggestions on current tattoo artists in Canberra/Qbn?

Thanks in advance.

Wise move to rely on “word of mouth” over Instagram and all it’s cheatin’ filters👍🏻👍🏻

Your best bet is to also do your research and look for examples of healed work posted by the artist. A good colour tattoo shouldn’t dull down much once it’s healed, the colours should just soften slightly. Also plenty of healed examples in their portfolio also indicates that their clients come back for more. Any tattoo can look good when it’s freshly done, it’s how well it heals and ages that really matters.

Also when looking over a portfolio, examine the colours of the photo background and the skin tone of the client. If the colours look off and unnatural, you can bet the photo has been altered in some way and the tattoo is being presented falsely. Photoshop was a big no no back when I started out, now it is rife in the industry.

Basically, do your research and you’ll get a good tattoo👍🏻
