Ask RiotACT: Petrol in Fyshwick

Ask RiotACT

Hi, Rioters,

My car is 15 years old and is in pretty good order. It takes 40 litres and when the gauge says half, I fill up to 20 litres exactly.

A month ago when the tank was half full, I had to put in 27 litres (I fill up fortnightly). Yesterday, when it was half empty, I had to put in 24 litres. This time I alerted the station, who said it could be a problem with my car. I said that next time, I will check with another petrol station. I went to Toyota Fyshwick immediately who said the problem could be with either the car or the petrol station and suggested I ask the petrol station when their tanks were last calibrated. I do hope this is a minor problem with my car as this station is quite convenient for me.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Yet another update to my post – you need to call the National Trade Measurement hotline on 1300-686-664. They don’t need your identity or details, but need the address of the petrol station and pump number, which will be on the receipt.

Fill a 20 litre jerrycan with 20litres from the pump. Compare the difference, lk

I can’t believe that they actually do this and get away with it. This is corrupt and they should be closed down so they make no money and investigated.

This is an update to my post. I used another petrol station and my half tank was exactly 20 litres. So there’s nothing wrong with my car. I have just now contacted Measurements Australia and they will follow it up! Sometimes perhaps the cheapest retailer isn’t always the best. Thanks Rodney for replying, and thanks Riot-ACT for putting up my post! 🙂

$1.80 a litre at the roadhouse near Marulan on the weekend for basic unleaded fuel. I consider myself gouged.

Like the time i fulled up once in sydney my motorcycle had a 17 ltr tank but yet i managed to put in 26 ltrs i asked the guy at the service station whats going on he said ur tank must be bigger i was like no its not. Asked for a receipt took a photo of it and the manual for my bike stating how many litres it could hold emailed the head office and i was refunded the entire amount on the receipt. Its the service stations ripping you off. They know its happening but dont do anything
