Belco Mall wants you to play for free

By Barcham - 25 July 2013 18

Westfield

Westfield Belconnen are looking for their next live performer!

They’re also looking not to pay them!

We are looking for talented musicians to provide ambience and entertainment to our customers. We’ll give you the space to busk in centre, you just need to bring your talent!

If you’re interested please email belconnenmarketing@au.westfield.com with the following information.

-A sound bite or youtube clip of you performing
-A list of what you will need to bring in centre for your performance (ie. instruments, sound equipment)
-A brief bio on yourself, where you have performed previously and what entertainment you would like to provide (ie. genre of music)

All ages are welcome to apply, under 16yrs will require a parent or guardian present during the busking times.

Look this is probably good new to some buskers who’d like somewhere indoor to play, and the fact that Belco Mall is cool with busking on its premises is nice, but when you advertise it this way it just makes you look like you’re trying to get free entertainment.

One imagines Westfield could probably afford to hire musicians.

What’s Your opinion?

I’d rather listen to the untalented live musicians than the untalented ramblings and caterwauling that is 104.7

As for the pay issue, they’re busking. The shoppers pay them. A mate of mine can pull $100 an hour in the right place at the right time.

God I hate those incomprehensible numbers that deface quotes sometimes.

Stick to plain old ASCII and they don’t happen.

If I knew what that meant, I would…But some little angel has fixed up the first quotes, anyway.

When I see things like that, I am always reminded of this:

Advert : We are a small & casual restaurant downtown and we are looking for solo musicians to play in our restaurant to promote their work and sell their CD.This is not a daily job, but only for special events which will eventually turn into a nightly event if we get positive response. More Jazz, Rock, & smooth type music, around …the world and mixed cultural music. Are you interested to promote your work? Please reply back ASAP.

A Musician’s Reply: Happy new year! I am a musician with a big house looking for a restauranteur to come to my house to promote his/her restaurant by making dinner for me and my friends. This is not a daily job, but only for special events which will eventually turn into a nightly event if we get a positive response.More fine dining & exotic meals and mixed Ethnic Fusion cuisine. Are you interested to promote your restaurant? Please reply back ASAP

George Bernard Shaw.

Yup. That’s because the guy who wrote the forum software that runs The-RiotACT did it for free.

See what I did there?

George Bernard Shaw. I always though that was Saint Oscar, so lucky I checked.

On the other hand, the recorded music played in shops has got to be worse. American Christmas carols, anyone?

Great, more reason not to go to Belco, now ive got to listen to annoying untalented musicians while i try avoid getting stabbed

As a musician, I’m happy to perform free to either support a cause or advance my artistic craft.

I will be a fetid corpse before Westfield Belconnen qualifies for either.

The only buskers I’ve seen in Canberra are old men playing harmonica’s or 13 year olds learning to play flute.

Don’t forget that awful girl who used to stand outside the old jeweller at Centrepoint and ‘sing’! (I use the term loosely – the sound of her nasal screeching was like fingernails down a blackboard.)

They’ve had musicians at Woden on the weekends before – I might have missed it, but I don’t think there was a gratuity receptacle involved.

“One imagines Westfield could probably afford to hire musicians.”

Well, yes they could but that wouldn’t be in the best interests of the shareholders, would it!

My guess is many musos will apply, a couple will be selected. When they get a bit established and the tips are looking good Westfield will want a piece of the action – they’ll mumble something about Public Liability Insurance . . .

Careful everyone. Don’t think Belconnen – think Troy.
